The current flag of Zeist was adopted on May 24, 1971 by the municipality of Zeist as the municipal and city flag. At the same time, a municipal standard was adopted. It has the same design as the flag, but with a ratio of 1:1 (instead of 2:3).[1]

Design

The flag has a white background with a thin black stripe on the top. The division between the stripe and the background is canted with two black battlements protruding down from the top stripe. The battlements are square and are the same height as the top stripe. Two additional battlements exist below the sides of the top stripe, which are also the same height as the top stripe, but with half the width of the other battlements.[citation needed]

History

Prior to 1938, a black and white horizontal bicolor flag was unofficially in use. On July 22, 1938, a new flag was adopted, having the same pattern as the previous flag, but with the municipal coat of arms imposed as the canton. On May 24, 1971, the current flag was adopted.[1]

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Zeist

The coat of arms of Zeist were adopted on September 11, 1816 by the High Council of Nobility. It was derived from the blazon (shield) of the Van Seijst family (which had ruled Zeist since the 12th century), however it is not identical, as the battlements are narrower than the Van Seijst shield.[1][2]
