Flaschenpost SE (stylized as flaschenpost) is a German food delivery service for beverages and other groceries, based in Münster.
History
The company Flaschenpost GmbH was founded in August 2012 by Münster-based entrepreneur Dieter Büchl.[1] After a planning phase, deliveries from its own warehouse in Münster began for the first time in October 2014.[2] The unexpectedly high demand quickly led to an overload of logistics processes, making it impossible to transition from the test phase to regular operations. For this reason, delivery operations were initially suspended at the end of January 2015.[3][4]
After the internal processes for handling high demand were revised, operations reopened in April 2016.[4][5][6] At the beginning of 2016, Stephen Weich joined Flaschenpost’s management. Additional branches in Cologne and Mannheim followed soon after. For a planned expansion, Christopher Huesmann and Niklas Plath joined the team in 2017.[1] With the conversion of Flaschenpost GmbH into a joint-stock company in August 2018, founder Dieter Büchl moved to the supervisory board, taking its chair.[7] Stephen Weich was appointed to the executive board; in October 2018, Niklas Plath and Christopher Huesmann joined him.[1] In January 2019, the company was transformed into the current Flaschenpost SE.[8] The executive board was expanded in June 2020 by Julian Pachta and in December 2021 by Aron Spohr. At the end of 2021, Stephen Weich resigned from the board. Since then, Niklas Plath and Christopher Huesmann have served as co-CEOs, also sharing the chairmanship of the board.[9]
On October 30, 2020, the Radeberger Group, which belongs to the Oetker Group, acquired the company. On December 2, 2020, the German Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover.[10][11] Subsequently, Flaschenpost merged with the beverage delivery service Durstexpress, which also belongs to the Oetker Group,[12] leading to the dismissal of numerous Durstexpress employees.[13][14]
Since late summer 2020, Flaschenpost has also been delivering groceries, starting again with the Münster location.[15] The product range expansion followed at additional locations, including Berlin in September 2021. In March 2023, numerous organic products from Alnatura were added to the product range.[16]
Concept
The company offers online ordering of beverages, groceries, and everyday products, delivering them to customers within 120 minutes.[17] A delivery fee is charged in certain delivery areas, depending on the order value, and amounts to a maximum of €3.90. As of 2021, Flaschenpost provides delivery service nationwide in Germany from over 33 warehouse locations,[18] covering 170 German cities and municipalities.[19][5] The main focus region is on North Rhine-Westphalia.
Orders can be placed via the online shop on the website or through a mobile app for smartphones and tablets.[20] At each location, Flaschenpost operates up to 150 delivery vehicles. The company employs around 20,000 people across Germany, most of them in logistics,[21] who, according to the company, deliver up to 150,000 crates per day.[5] In Germany, Flaschenpost was the first online instant delivery service for beverages[22] and is the market leader in this segment.[20]

Criticism
The company came under criticism in the summer of 2020 for taking action against the formation of workers councils at some locations[24][25] and for not providing employees with air-conditioned vehicles despite receiving large multi-million investments from investors such as Vorwerk Ventures and record profits during the corona crisis.[26] [21] Employees felt systematically monitored. “Former and current employees reported constant video surveillance in the logistics centers.”[27]
In the wake of the acquisition by Dr. August Oetker KG and the merger with the former competitor Durstexpress, employees again voiced criticism, describing a “climate of fear”.[28] The SWR reported that team and shift leaders had to work unpaid overtime, drivers often could not leave on time, there were issues with occupational safety, and employees who were absent due to illness through no fault of their own were quickly dismissed.[28] In June 2021, the newspaper taz reported that employees were required to “sign a release of medical confidentiality to the employer.” The newspaper had a copy of an employment contract containing this clause.
