Flavia Weedn (born February 19, 1929 – June 10, 2015) was an American artist, illustrator, and poet. Her artwork has been reproduced as forms of books, posters, cards, and calendars internationally in multiple languages. Her children’s book Flavia and the Dream maker was made into a musical stage play. Her work has been the subject of national and regional press coverage in America.
Flavia Weedn wrote more than 30 books (publishers include Disney’s Hyperion Books, Roserich, Wisdom Tales Press, and Cedco Publishing) and has received numerous reviews...[1] and notoriety[2][3]. Her books, illustrations, and poetry are used in positive affirmation and motivation teaching. Furthermore, her work was chosen by Barbara Bush to be included in the National Literacy Campaign[4].
Flavia Weedn’s most well-known poem, “Some People,” has been used in many school evocations, health magazines, quotations in books, blogs, and in memorials in many epitaphs[5][6][7][8][9][10][11].
In the summer of 1986, Flavia Weedn received national press coverage when news of an antitrust law suit arose between her (Flavia Weedn vs. Hallmark Cards). This was broadcast on ABC’s 20/20, UPI[12], published in the LA Times[13], and Kansas City’s Lawrence Journal[14].
Biography
Born at Los Angeles Queen of Angels hospital and raised in Huntington Park, California. Her mother, Sylvia Register, was a doll maker; her father, Flavil Register, was a mystery writer. She expressed this journey in her book and musical play, Flavia and the Dream Maker[2][1].
As a child, Flavia Weedn began expressing herself through dance in Los Angeles in 1939, fashion merchandising in 1948, painting in 1959, and writing in 1969. She started selling her art on her front lawn as a single mother, then later, together with her husband, Jack Weedn, at street fairs and art festivals throughout California. In 1963, they opened the first art gallery in Laguna Beach, California. Her next art galleries were opened at The Disneyland Hotel, Long Beach, California’s Ports-of-Call, Snowmass at Aspen[3], Colorado, and Huntington Beach, California.
Flavia and Jack Weedn began licensing her artwork in 1965 in the form of art prints, calendars, and greeting cards. They started Rainbow Paper Company in 1980 in Long Beach, California. This grew to evolve into The Flavia Company, Inc. of Santa Barbara, California in 1990 and was later sold to Archivea GmbH in Lugano, Switzerland in 2009[15].
The US Copyright Office notes more than 1200 creations attributed to Flavia Weedn and her Weedn Family Trust[16].
Flavia Weedn lived with her family in Orange County, California from 1967–1979 and Santa Barbara, California from 1979 to 2015. Flavia and husband Jack Weedn (1925–2013) were survived by their children, Lisa Weedn and Richard Weedn. Flavia Weedn contributed to charities CALM and the Alzheimer’s Association of Santa Barbara[17].
Flavia died June 10, 2015, of complications from Lewy Body Disease[18].
