Florganoleptic
Florganoleptic is a music genre that refers to the interaction between humans and plants. This is done with the use of an electronic MIDI instrument that measures the plant's bioelectrical fluctuations with the help of a probe that monitors the electrical impulse between two electrodes and turns it into musical notes and phrases.
Etymology[edit]
The word florganoleptic is a combination of the words flora and organoleptic and refers to plants interacting with humans using biofeedback devices. Examples of these devices are the Bamboo, Bamboo M and U1 from Music of the Plants[1] and the PlantWave Plant Music Device from PlantWave[2]
History[edit]
In 1978, Oberto Airaudi, founder of Damanhur Spiritual Federation[3] in Northern Italy, and his colleagues began studying the bioelectricity of plants, trees, and flowers.[4] Electrical conductivity, they discovered, is a significant measure of a plant's life force as it generates key channels for water, minerals, and other nutrients within trees and flowers.[5] They demonstrated plants' ability to interact with humans using various biofeedback devices, including a demonstration of a plant driving a miniature cart and unlocking a door.[6] After a few years, they decided to concentrate on employing biofeedback devices to translate changes in plant electrical conductivity in to midi notes.[7] They discovered that by using a probe that monitors the electrical impulse between two electrodes, they could capture the electrical behavior of plants,[7] and they developed several midi devices and offered them for sale on Music of the Plants website.[1][8] Music of the Plants makes no claims that the devices are detecting anything other than changes in electrical conductivity, stating that "under some circumstances, such as a high humidity environment, there could be passage of extremely low voltage current between the two electrodes."[7]
Examples[edit]
Biofeedback midi devices have been utilized by many people to help generate florganoleptic music.[9][10][11][12] Tom Wall is a key figure in the field of florganoleptic music, and he has given numerous interviews and written many articles about his musical relationships with plants.[13][14][15][16]
