Pappenberger grew up in Germany. He attended Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. Here he earned two degrees. The former being a Master's degree with distinction in Environmental science in 2000, with his Dissertation as "Uncertainty in flood inundation modeling on the River Morava (Czech Republic)", supervised by Keith Beven. The latter was a Phd, awarded in 2004, his thesis on "Uncertainty in flood inundation modelling", supervised by the same man.[1]
Research and Career
Florian is the author of over 250 scientific publications.[2] He joined the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in 2006 as a Principal Scientist and Team Leader. After moving thorugh the ranks, he was appointed Director-General in January 2026.[3][4]
