Fluttershy is a fictional character who appears in the fourth incarnation (also referred to as the fourth generation or "G4") of Hasbro's My Little Pony toyline and media franchise, beginning with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. She is voiced by Andrea Libman.

Appearances[edit]

Friendship is Magic[edit]

Fluttershy is a pegasus pony who lives in a cottage near the Everfree Forest outside of Ponyville where she takes care of local woodland animals, most notably her rabbit Angel. She is timid and often shy around other ponies, preferring instead to communicate with her animal friends. She has a special ability called "The Stare", which she can use to turn misbehaving animals meek. She obtained her cutie mark while attending summer flight camp in her native Cloudsdale. When taunted by bullies over her poor flying ability, Rainbow Dash challenges them to a race to defend her honor. During the race, Fluttershy accidentally falls off a cloud, and is saved from crashing to the ground by a swarm of butterflies where she is overcome with the beauty of the fauna. When a distant explosion, (caused by Rainbow Dash performing a Sonic Rainboom during the race) scares away the animals, she comforts them and earns her cutie mark in the process. After Twilight Sparkle moves to Ponyville with her assistant Spike, Fluttershy soon becomes friends with them and the other main characters of the series, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Rarity.

Fluttershy is very knowledgable in fashion and sewing, being able to critique Rarity's designs and make a dress for her as well as briefly becoming a popular fashion model despite her lack of confidence. Fluttershy is shown to be a talented musician, being the conductor of a songbird choir and being recruited to join the Pony Tones, an acapella group in the season four episode "Filli Vanilli". However, she declines due to her stage fright but ends up becoming a part-time member at the end of the episode. Over the course of the series, Fluttershy often has to overcome her persistent shyness such as by confronting a dragon (which she is afraid of) or by taking assertiveness seminars in the episodes "Dragonshy" and "Putting Your Hoof Down", respectively. However, she is often able to succeed out of dedication to her friends. By the season seven episode "Fluttershy Leans In", she builds an animal sanctuary and gains the confidence to dismiss the experts she hired when they fail to follow her instructions.

Representing the Element of Kindness, Fluttershy helps Twilight defeat several villains over the course of the series, including the powerful spirit of chaos Discord in the season two premiere. Beginning with the season three episode "Keep Calm and Flutter On", she is tasked with reforming Discord, who eventually fully reforms by the end of the fourth season. The two later develop a close relationship over later episodes.

After the events of My Little Pony: The Movie, Twilight opens a School of Friendship with Fluttershy as the kindness professor. She soon becomes the most popular teacher at the school and wins several consecutive Teacher of the Month awards. Following the end of the series, she and the rest of the Mane Six keep in touch as members of the Council of Friendship.

Equestria Girls[edit]

Fluttershy makes cameo appearances in the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls spin-off franchise in scenes set in Equestria.

Pony Life[edit]

Fluttershy appears as a main character in the spin-off series My Little Pony: Pony Life.

Equestria Girls alternate version[edit]

An alternate, human version of Fluttershy appears in the Equestria Girls franchise as a student at Canterlot High School. Similar to her pony counterpart, she is also shy around others and finds greater friendship with animals. She brings several animals to school, hiding them in her backpack and is a volunteer at the local animal shelter. She is the Rainbooms' tambourinist and obtains the ability to talk to animals as her geode power in Legend of Everfree, the fourth Equestria Girls film.

Development[edit]

Lauren Faust was inspired to create Fluttershy based on the G1 character Posey. The name "Fluttershy" had also previously been used for a G3 character.

Reception[edit]

Fluttershy was well recived.
