Search Forgotten Runes on Amazon.Forgotten Runes is a series of non-fungible token (NFT) collections produced by creative studio Magic Machine, originating from the Ethereum blockchain.

Magic Machine has a stated goal of forming a media franchise around the Forgotten Runes brand, and has engaged animation studio Titmouse and film producer Derek Kolstad to produce an eight-part animated series[1][2]. In May 2022, Magic Machine released a trailer for an eight-part series to be created in conjunction with Titmouse and produced by Derek Kolstad. The trailer is voiced by Kristian Nairn and has garnered over 880,000 views to date.

Magic Machine has also engaged Bisonic Games to develop a massively multiplayer role-playing online game[3][4] based around the Forgotten Runes intellectual property.

The franchise has produced its first physical comic, titled Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult June Issue #0, freely distributed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022.

Inception and Design

Inception

Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult was founded by two partners going by the pseudonyms Dotta and ElfJTrul, who later created the holding company Magic Machine to manage the development of a brand and media franchise around the IP. Dotta developed the smart contracts, and ElfJTrul the pixel art images used by the tokens.

The original Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult NFT project launched on June 30th, 2021 on block 12736300 of the Ethereum blockchain and completed minting about 25 minutes later (last block 12736411). Currently, the collection encompasses 8 projects, notably the Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult (the original collection), Forgotten Runes Warrior's Guild, and Forgotten Souls, among others. The project community has launched derivative collections such as Forgotten Nouns and Forgotten Babies, which have been included in the franchise's official marketplace.

Design

The collection was designed by Dotta and ElfJTrul to embody some of the Web3 ideals, by applying the concepts of provable ownership and commercialization into the domain of story-telling and narrative building. Popular NFT projects like Bored Apes Yacht Club provide token holders with a platform for building media directly on top of the intellectual property (IP) represented by the token art. Magic Machine provided a way for token owners to gradually expand on the narrative of any individual token over time, using a decentralized tool called Book of Lore, which allows text to be stored on the Ethereum blockchain, and associated media to be stored on the Interplanetary File System.

The aggregation, over time, of records within the Book of Lore allows for decentralised access to narratives from multiple contributors within the community. Consequently, the aggregated data provided a source of browsable stories and narratives that allowed Derek Kolstad and members of Bisonic Games to draw inspiration from whilst developing an animation series[1][5][2] and designing a game[6][3][4][7] around the franchise respectively.
