Formula 1.5 (F1.5)

Formula 1.5 (often abbreviated as F1.5) is an unofficial, fan-created championship within the Formula One World Championship. It was created to track, celebrate, and discuss the drivers and teams competing in the "midfield" of Formula One, effectively removing the dominant top teams from the standings to simulate a more closely contested championship.[1]

The concept gained significant popularity on Reddit during the late 2010s—particularly during the 2018 season—as a coping mechanism for fans frustrated by the predictability of the front of the grid, where teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull Racing dominated the podiums.[2]

Rules and format

Formula 1.5 does not exist in real life; there is no physical trophy or official FIA recognition. Instead, it is a statistical exercise managed by a community of fans.

The primary rule of Formula 1.5 is the exclusion of the "top teams" from all session and event results. If the drivers from the excluded top teams finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in a real-life Grand Prix, the driver who finishes 4th overall is awarded the Formula 1.5 race victory and receives 25 points under the standard Formula One scoring system. All subsequent midfield drivers are bumped up accordingly.

Team eligibility

Since the series' origin in 2018, the teams are commonly chosen by popular opinion. In some seasons it is fairly easy, such as in 2019, but in others, like 2020, it is more difficult to separate the midfield from the top teams. For past seasons (2017 and earlier) the rule of "less than 25% on the podium" is applied, but there may be exceptions to this rule. The absolute authority on the matter is the mod team of the subreddit r/Formula1Point5.
