Forrest Valkai (born 1992) is an American biologist, science communicator, and YouTuber in Oklahoma known for his educational content on evolution, biology, and science advocacy.

Early life

Forrest Gryphon Valkai was born Forrest Mayer on July 22, 1992, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.[1][2] His parents were Austrian.[3] His father's name is Heinrich;[4] he has one brother. He told an interviewer for TulsaPeople that "as a kid I grew up very poor. My family relied on food stamps and other social safety nets."[5]

Valkai has talked about being raised "pagan." He told a questioner, "Poverty brings with it diversity, and...my family was very interested in multiculturalism. And so we went to every church and mosque and temple and cathedral and everything all around town. To every cultural festival and everything; largely, because we were looking for food, but also because we just wanted to go explore and, like, learn about people. And being around other poor people of all different walks of life, I learned very early on that everybody wants the same thing. Everybody just wants a safe place to be. Everybody wants peace and love and happiness, and quiet, and comfort, and all those things. Uh, and a better life for the next generation: that's everybody, everybody wants that same shit."[6]

Valkai says, "My family were immigrants. My dad never naturalized. My family would not be here without these [Constitutional] rights. I probably wouldn't be here without these rights, because I'm a dual citizen."[7]

Education

Valkai earned several degrees from the University of Tulsa. He holds associate degrees in science education and evolutionary biology, specifically human biology, and in Liberal Arts and Biology. He earned a Bachelor's degree in integrative biology.[8][9]

He earned his first Master's degree in biological anthropology.[8][10] His second Master's was in biomedical anthropology.[11] In 2025, he was studying for a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology, with a focus on neuroendocrinology; his doctoral thesis examined which endocrines in the brain are at work when people are learning.[8]

Career

Politics

In 2017, at the age of 24, Valkai (as Forrest Mayer) joined the race for Oklahoma House of Representatives District 76 in a special election to fill a vacant seat.[12][13] Valkai ran as a Democrat on a platform of protecting public education and educators' existing benefits,[14] corporate tax reform, and evidence-based decision-making.[5] His statement to introduce himself to voters said:

Forrest is an informal science educator who believes that Oklahoma is long overdue for an update. Our laws are outdated, our technology is obsolete, and our legislature's priorities are petty and narrow-minded. Our grand state is quickly falling behind. In many places, it already has. Forrest sees the lessons of science as guides to effective public policy. When making decisions, he relies on evidence and reason rather than emotion and tradition in order to ensure that issues are solved fairly, rationally, and in an innovative manner. His goal is to bring Oklahoma into the 21st Century and put us on the cutting edge of industry, education, and technology.[15]

He won the Democrat nomination but lost in 2018 against incumbent Ross Ford in the general election. (Later, he registered as an Independent.[1])

Science teacher and popularizer on YouTube

Valkai is a content creator on YouTube and TikTok, where he teaches about science,[10] chiefly biology and the theory of evolution, explains the differences between sex and gender, and debunks pseudoscience, such as Creationism. As of April 2025, his YouTube channel, Renegade Science Teacher, had 196 videos with over 28 million views.[16]

In addition to his YouTube channel, Valkai appears regularly on the YouTube shows The Line, The Line Edge, and The Atheist Experience, has appeared on the show The Thinking Atheist[17], and has been interviewed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).[18]

He usually broadcasts from his home in Tulsa, but also, yearly, when he travels. In the 2020s, he uploaded videos of himself in some of the Galápagos Islands and in Borneo, locations where he explores the environs; describes the natural environment; and tells viewers about his (sometimes hands-on) visits to see the creatures and non-living features, especially rocks. Valkai frequently vlogs about his fondness for stones and fossils, many of which he keeps in his broadcasting studio/library.

Because Amber grew up, my wife, ... she grew up Bapti-Pentecostal, whatever, and so she still will, like, occasionally she'll have one of her old church songs from Youth Camp pop into her head, and like she'll sing loud as fuck across the house just to be weird... One time, I come out, she's in the kitchen she's like 'I am showered, showered in the blood, blood, blood!' She was jamming it out: 'In the precious, precious blood!'
