Fort Doyle is a Victorian-era fort on the island of Alderney in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Built in 1793, it was named after Sir John Doyle.[1] The fort is located on the north side of the island, and contains additions from the German occupation during World War II. [2] The fort was opened to the public in 2022.
History
German occupation
During the German occupation of the Channel Islands, Fort Doyle was renamed Resistance Nest Dohlenfeste, and new fortifications surrounding the fort were built. A trench system, a mortar, machine gun emplacements, a tank turret, and 2 4.7cm PakK 36 gun emplacements were built in and around the fort.[2]
