Fort Joy

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Fort Joy is a location within the game Divinity: Original Sin II, published by Larian Studios. The fort is located on Reaper's Eye, an island on the High Seas in Rivellon, and is the first location the player gains access to in Divinity Original Sin: 2. Fort Joy serves as a prison and internment camp for Sourcerers, source-users deemed too dangerous to reside on the main-land.

History[edit]

Prior to the events of the game, Fort Joy was home to the experimentation of the Source King Braccus Rex, a powerful tyrant whose many captives and servants still haunt the island through bound souls and unbroken oaths.[1]. Braccus Rex created source weapons on the island to assist in his reign of terror against the Sourcerers who seek to defy him. Long after the Source King's death, the island remained untouched, yet the Fort's history would again become relevant. Remnants of his activity are scattered around the island, along with foreboding statues erected in is image[2]

During the time in which the game's events take place, Fort Joy has been transformed into an internment camp by the Divine Order, seeking to rid the world of Source. Due to the previous experimentation enacted on the island, much of the ancient research and weaponry was utilised in the effort to contain and cleanse Sourcerers, ultimately purging them of their Source and weaponizing them to further the Divine Order's agenda.

Points of Interest[3][edit]

Fort Joy Square[edit]

The Square is the main hub of the Fort for the Sourcerers that inhabit it. The area is a ghetto, there are stand-to's and tents that dot the area, and there is no real housing to be seen, other than the ruins in the centre of the fort, which is under the control of Griff, the ringleader, and his group. Here there are merchants, healers and Divnine Order Magisters patrolling the area, along with companions Ifan Ben-Mezd and Lohse, who will join the protagonist if requested.

Below the square is an arena where the inhabitants can fight against one another to prove their worth, to prove they are The One

Caverns[edit]

The Caverns are home to a majority of the Elven population that reside in the fort, along with children and other outsiders that find it too dangerous to walk in the square. A notable character you meet is Saheila, who is known to be the next scion for her Elven people. Further inside the cavern, there are alcoves infested with amphibians of both poisonous and electric variations, the areas they inhabit abandoned. The player can also meet a soul-captured undead named Lord Withermoore, pinned to the wall with his own spear, who resides through a hidden trap-door only the children of the cavern know of.

Fort Joy[edit]

The main body of Fort Joy serves as the barracks for the Divine Order Magisters and the bridge between the Fort and the Hollow Marshes that lies further along the island. In the above ground levels of the Fort there are sleeping chambers for Magister Orivand, the highest in command at the Fort, storage crates littering the hallways and Magisters that patrol specific routes and perform purification rituals on Sourcerers[4].

Below ground lies the Fort Joy dungeons, which contain those that have either committed a crime under the eyes of the Divine Order, or the Sourcerers who are in line to be purged of their Source.

The Hollow Marshes[edit]

The Hollow Marshes is the area of marshland that surrounds Fort Joy. Over the centuries it has become decayed and dangerous due to its century old abandonment[5]. Here are relics of Braccus Rex's ancient experiments, towers and mazes to keep out, or maim, unwanted visitors, ruins that are home to those who serve the Void, and a sanctuary nestled in the cliffs that serves as a safe place for Sourcerers who manage to escape from the Fort.
