Fountain guards

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Fountain guards are elite guards of the Kingdom of Gondor in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. They are the best soldiers in the entire kingdom and permanently guard the White Tree of Gondor.

Equipment

The Fountain guards wore equipment similar to that of ordinary Gondor knights, though more elaborately crafted.

They wore a uniform of black robes and black surcoats, embroidered in white with a blossoming tree beneath a silver crown and numerous pointed stars. They also wore black scarves covering the lower part of their faces. Their helms were high-crowned and pointed, with long cheek guards fitting closely to the face, and above these were set the white wings of sea-birds to honour their seafaring Númenórean heritage; the helms were made of mithril and heirlooms from ancient times. While Númenórean in design, they were not of Númenórean origin. Few helms escaped the Downfall, except perhaps those of Elendil (which became the White Crown), Isildur, and Anárion. Anárion's helm was crushed by a stone thrown from Barad-dûr.

The Fountain guards were primarily a spear-carrying unit; each soldier carried a spear as their primary weapon, along with a thick wooden shield painted black with the Gondor tree and star, and a short ceremonial sword for close combat.

Roles

The Fountain guards saw little combat during the War of the Ring. Although the city burned around them and the air swarmed with Fell Beasts, they remained at their posts, guarding their Steward and the White Tree throughout the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

They appear in the game The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth as Gondor's spear class. They can only be created from a rank 2 Gondor Barracks and cost more to recruit than ordinary soldiers. Their formation is interchangeable between their default line formation and a dense "shield wall" formation, where they gain 80% armour but lose 75% speed. They return in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II as Gondor's spear-carrying class.
