Frank Adamo is an American author, blogger, child safety advocate, former English-language teacher, and independent researcher best known for his blog (active 2011–2022) and his self-published works critiquing what he termed “sex hysteria” in modern society—particularly around childhood sexuality, nudity, false accusations of child abuse, and cultural repression of juvenile masturbation. He produced educational materials including the eBook Real Child Safety, the photo-documentary Girl Becomes Woman, the instructional video Buddy Massage, and the novel Revolt of the Children. Adamo lived in Italy for approximately 30 years, teaching English in public and private schools while volunteering in a Palermo pediatric oncology ward. His work and legal prosecution in Italy for child pornography charges made him a polarizing figure in debates over child protection laws, censorship, and cultural attitudes toward juvenile sexuality.
Early Life
Frank Adamo was born in New Jersey, United States, around 1963.[1][2] He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.[3]Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag[2] Little else is publicly documented about his childhood or family background; he has not shared detailed personal memoirs beyond occasional references in his blog and academic uploads to his own early experiences with childhood genital stimulation as evidence for his theories.[4][5]
Career
Adamo moved to Europe in 1990 and lived in Italy for roughly three decades, primarily in Palermo, Sicily.[6] He worked as an English teacher, giving private lessons and teaching in public schools.[7][8] He also volunteered in the pediatric oncology department of a Palermo hospital, assisting child cancer patients.[3]
Parallel to teaching, Adamo authored and self-published several works on child safety and sexuality education, including multiple editions of Teach English in Italy.[9] He released the eBook Real Child Safety (2014).[10][11] The photo-documentary Girl Becomes Woman (2013–2014) tracked breast development in one girl from ages 9 to 15.[12] The instructional video Buddy Massage (2015) demonstrated non-sexual massage techniques between children.[13][14] He also wrote the novel Revolt of the Children.[15][16]
In 2011 he launched the blog SexHysteria.wordpress.com under the Foundation for Research and Education on Child Safety banner.[17] The site hosted dozens of posts arguing that Western “sex hysteria” (overzealous child-protection laws, taboos on nudity, and repression of childhood masturbation) causes more harm than the risks it seeks to prevent.[18] He published scholarly papers on Academia.edu, including “Clitoral Erection and Healthy Sexual Function,” “Clitoral Erectile Dysfunction,” “Feminism and Child Sex Hysteria,” “Sex and National Security,” and “Denying Sexual Dysfunction in Women.”[5][19][20][21][22] His last blog post appeared on May 1, 2022 (“Selective Outrage in Sex Hysteria”); the site has remained frozen since.[18]
Adamo described himself on his Vimeo channel and blog as “American English teacher and photographer in Europe since 1990” and explicitly stated he did not “defend, promote or excuse any kind of abuse or exploitation.”[13][6]
Legal Troubles
Adamo’s legal troubles began with an investigation opened in 2013 by Palermo prosecutors after two families in the Brancaccio district reported he offered money to film their children.[2][23] On or around January 12–13, 2017, Italian police arrested him at his Palermo home on charges of production and possession of child pornography.[24][25] Officers seized hard drives containing his Buddy Massage video (showing two approximately 10-year-old children massaging each other, with no genital contact or erotic intent) and numerous photographs of naked children, some allegedly local and paid for.[26][27] Prosecutors Salvatore De Luca and Federica La Chioma argued the material was pornographic, not art or scientific research; an initial rejection by the judge for preliminary investigations (GIP) was overturned by the Riesame court and Italy’s Supreme Court (Cassazione).[28]
In October 2018, the Tribunale di Palermo convicted Adamo (under abbreviated procedure) of producing child pornography and sentenced him to four years in prison plus an €18,000 fine.[29][30] Additional charges of sexual violence (violenza sessuale) emerged after identified victims (aged 10) alleged repeated sexual approaches beyond mere filming.[31] He was placed under house arrest pending further proceedings.[29]
Adamo maintained his innocence, arguing the works were non-erotic educational materials and that Italian courts applied a double standard.[32] In a January 7, 2022 blog post (“Italy’s Double Standard on Child Porn”), he noted that the local appeals court had upheld the original conviction, targeting both Buddy Massage (from which an incidental nude scene had been removed) and Girl Becomes Woman.[32] He contrasted his punishment with unprosecuted Italian films (e.g., Fellini’s Amarcord, Taviani brothers’ Padre Padrone, Michele Pennetta’s Il Mio Corpo, and Asia Argento’s Incompresa) that depicted child nudity or simulated sexual acts.[32] Adamo wrote: “It’s discrimination and a violation of human rights if Italian citizens repeatedly get away with making movies that depict children nude or simulating sexual acts, but a foreign teacher like me is punished for an instructional video on healthy massage.” He expressed fear that the state might silence him “the cruel, old-fashioned way.” No public updates on final appeals, imprisonment, or resolution appear after 2022; the case received coverage only in the Italian media and never became international news.[33][34]
Scientific and Social Theories
Adamo developed a series of closely interconnected ideas about human sexuality that run through nearly all of his blog posts and the scholarly-style papers he uploaded to Academia.edu between 2011 and 2022. At their heart, these writings contend that modern Western culture’s intense fear of childhood sexuality — what he repeatedly called “sex hysteria” — does far more damage than the dangers it claims to prevent, especially to the sexual development and lifelong well-being of girls and women.[4][35]
Clitoral Erectile Dysfunction and the Concept of “Mental Castration”
Adamo’s most provocative hypothesis suggests that the widespread cultural and parental discouragement of childhood masturbation and genital play inflicts a specific, lasting neurological injury on girls. He named this injury “Clitoral Erectile Dysfunction” (CED) and argued it is fundamentally different from the broader category of female sexual dysfunction described in medical literature.[19]
In his Clitoral Erection and Healthy Sexual Function paper, Adamo explained that the clitoris is an erectile organ fully capable of visible erections from infancy onward. He maintained that repeated self-stimulation during the critical early years is essential for proper wiring of brain regions in the cerebral cortex and hypothalamus. Without that stimulation before the massive neural pruning that occurs around puberty, those pathways atrophy through a “use it or lose it” mechanism, exactly as happens when one eye is covered in early childhood and permanent blindness results. Adamo wrote: “My hypothesis is that in some cases healthy clitoral erectile function atrophies during the massive neural pruning around puberty due to parental prohibition of childhood masturbation and sex play, and this is not merely a psychogenic problem but a neurological injury.”[5]
He described the practical consequences as reduced genital sensitivity, difficulty or impossibility of reaching orgasm during ordinary vaginal intercourse, and lifelong dependence on vibrators or other intense stimulation. Drawing on the 1999 Laumann et al. national survey and similar large-scale data, he asserted that these problems affect a majority of women in Western societies.[22]
In his separate paper on Clitoral Erectile Dysfunction, he sharpened the diagnosis further, arguing that his neurological explanation accounts for the symptoms more precisely than the vascular model proposed by Goldstein and Berman in 1998. He cited classic observations by Masters and Johnson on childhood clitoral responses and various studies on synapse pruning and critical periods in brain development to support the idea. Adamo often illustrated the point with his own childhood experiences of unrestricted genital stimulation, which he said allowed him to retain healthy erectile function into adulthood.[19]
Rejection of Psychological and Feminist Explanations
Adamo consistently rejected explanations that located the root of women’s sexual difficulties solely in adult psychology, relationships, hormones, or cultural attitudes formed after puberty. In his paper on Feminism and Child Sex Hysteria, he criticized authors such as Rachel Maines and Germaine Greer for missing the decisive childhood window. He placed primary responsibility on what he termed “sex hysteria” — a toxic combination of Judeo-Christian taboos, overprotective mothers, female schoolteachers, and certain strands of modern feminism that together enforce shame, silence, and prohibition around children’s natural bodies. He praised girls who actively rebelled against these restrictions as the ones most likely to develop normal sexual function. Additional writings such as those on denying sexual dysfunction in women and on sexual inhibition and mental castration reinforced the same childhood-origin argument.[20][4][22]
Extension to Broader Cultural and Political Consequences
Adamo did not stop at individual sexual function. In a paper entitled Sex and National Security, he argued that the same repressive mechanisms weaken society at large, linking sexual inhibition to reduced creativity, personal autonomy, and even national vitality.[21] He applied the framework across dozens of posts to topics ranging from false memories of abuse and the distinction between normal sex play and actual abuse, to cultural double standards about breasts and top freedom, the difference between artistic photography and pornography, emergency exceptions to taboos, Italian legal hypocrisy, sex crime vigilantes, and selective public outrage. He consistently presented his own prosecution as a living example of the very hysteria he had documented for more than a decade.[36][37][38][39][40][41][42][32][43][18]
Empirical Evidence: Partial Support and Contradictions
Adamo’s core assertion that early masturbation protects against later sexual difficulties receives some empirical backing. A large Portuguese community sample found that women who recalled beginning to masturbate at younger ages tended to report easier sexual arousal and more reliable orgasms in their adult relationships.[44] At the same time, a detailed analysis of multiple waves of Finnish national sex surveys found no statistically significant relationship between the age at which women first experienced orgasm through masturbation and how frequently they reached orgasm during partnered sex later in life. However, the Finnish researchers noted that the key variable they examined was mainly the timing of that very first masturbatory orgasm rather than the frequency or continuity of childhood genital stimulation over the years.[45]
Overall Place in Sexology
While Adamo’s writings offer a provocative and consistent critique of cultural repression, mainstream sexology has not adopted his specific diagnosis of Clitoral Erectile Dysfunction or the neurological-atrophy mechanism he proposed. Contemporary research treats female sexual difficulties as multifactorial, involving biological, hormonal, relational, psychological, and medical contributors. Nevertheless, his emphasis on the potential long-term costs of suppressing childhood sexuality remains a distinctive voice in ongoing debates about sex education, child protection laws, and cultural attitudes toward the developing body. Adamo framed every one of these ideas as direct extensions of the same “sex hysteria” phenomenon that ultimately led to his own legal troubles in Italy.[35]
Works
Adamo’s published works include Real Child Safety (eBook, multiple editions), Girl Becomes Woman (photo-documentary), Buddy Massage (video), Revolt of the Children (novel), and various editions of Teach English in Italy.[10][12][13][15][8]
Personal Life
Adamo lived as a single American expat in Palermo, Italy, with no public information on marriage, children, or current residence post-2022.[29] His online presence (blog, Academia.edu, Vimeo) remains static, and he has not updated readers on his legal situation or personal status since the blog’s final post.[18][46]
