Frank Schreiber (born 19 May 1968 in Illertissen, Germany) is a German physicist. His research focuses on soft and complex matter, studied mostly by scattering techniques. He is a head of a research group at the University of Tübingen and teaches several courses, including condensed matter physics and nanoscience. He has served on numerous advisory boards and reviewing panels, in particular related to neutron and synchrotron sources. He also served on the Committee Research with Neutrons (KFN).[1], and was the chair of this committee in 2021–2023. Co-author of more than 400 scientific publications.[2]

Education and career

Frank Schreiber studied physics at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and obtained the diploma degree in 1992 using photothermal techniques and a PhD in 1995 for work on magnetic thin films under the supervision of Josef Pelzl in collaboration with Hartmut Zabel and Zdenek Frait (Prague).

After a short stay at the Academy of Sciences in Prague in early 1996 he moved to Princeton as a postdoctoral research associate to work with Giacinto Scoles and Peter Eisenberger on organic thin films. In late 1997 he joined the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research (now Max-Planck-Institute for Intelligent Systems) and the University of Stuttgart and obtained the Habilitation degree with Helmut Dosch as his mentor. In 2002 he joined Oxford University and Wadham College as a lecturer in Physical Chemistry.

He joined Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and established a group on the physics of molecular and biological matter in 2005 [3]. In 2022 he was awarded an honorary PhD degree from the Slovak Academy of Science [4].

Achievements

The group of Frank Schreiber made important contributions to the understanding of molecular and biological matter, mostly studied with X-ray and neutron scattering techniques, in particular using

  • time-resolved X-ray scattering during crystallization and growth [5][6][7][8]
  • quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS)[11]
  • machine learning applied to scattering techniques[14][15]

A full list of publications can be found at the group’s homepage [2], web of science [16], and google scholar [17]
