Frank Wiedemann

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Frank Wiedemann (born 1973) is a German musician and owner of the Innervisions[1] and Bigamo Musik labels.[2] He is best known as one half of Âme and is also a member of electronic music acts A Critical Mass[3], Schwarzmann[4] and Howling[5] (alongside alternative singer, songwriter, and producer Ry X).

Career[edit]

Early Career & Âme[edit]

In 2001, Frank Wiedemann collaborated with Stefan Lechner under the name of Soul FC. The duo's first release - and Wiedemann's debut as a recording artist - 'TraneSpotting', was released on Compost Records in November 2001.[6]

Later in 2001, Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer launched their collaborative House music project, Âme.[7] The duo subsequently released numerous singles, EPs and remixes, as well as a full-length album, Dream House, in 2018.[8] The Âme Live album, released in 2012 demonstrated Wiedemann's transformation from DJ to a live act giving live reinterpretations of former Âme productions.[9]

Innervisions[edit]

In 2005, Wiedemann - alongside Kristian Beyer and Dixon - founded the record label Innervisions.

In September 2018 Innervisions arranged the first electronic music night at Royal Albert Hall in London.[10] Frank Wiedemann performed alongside Ry X as Howling, as well as a solo set as Âme (Live), while Matthew Herbert and Gudrun Gut joined him for their individual collaborations.[11][12]

Howling[edit]

In 2012, Wiedemann joined with Australian born and LA-based alternative artist RY X to form Howling. Their full length album, Sacred Ground, was released via Monkeytown Records and Ninja Tune in 2015.[13][14][15] The duo made their live debut later that year with a European headline and festival run, including performances at Sonar Barcelona[16], Lowlands, Pukkelpop and Panoramabar.[17] Since 2015, Frank Wiedemann and Ry X have curated Sacred Ground, an annual festival held a short distance outside of Berlin.[1][18]

In 2020. Howling released their second album Colure via Counter Records / Ninja Tune. [19][20][21]

Other Projects[edit]

Wiedemann's remix of Irish singer songwriter I Have A Tribe's Yellow Raincoats was released in 2014 on Grönland Records.[22]

Wiedemann's debut solo EP, Moorthon, was released on Innervisions in 2016.[23][24]

Frank Wiedemann occasionally performs alongside Henrik Schwarz, Dixon and Kristian Beyer as A Critical Mass. The group performed a live score for Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari at the Jetztmusik Festival and later at Ron Arad’s Curtain Call at The Roundhouse in London.[25] They also released a genre-spanning mix The Grandfather Paradox on BBE Records.[26]

Out of this collaboration, the project Schwarzmann with Henrik Schwarz evolved. The duo appear together in exclusive live performances based on improvisations rooted in house and techno music.[27][28] In the mid-2010s, Schwarz and Wiedemann invited numerous guest musicians (e.g. Bugge Wesseltoft, Kahil El’Zabar, Ben Westbeech, Pat Thomas, Robert Owens) to jam sessions lasting several hours. These Schwarzmann Soirees took place at the former Amsterdam music club Trouw and at the XJazz Festival in Berlin in 2016.[29][30]

For the techno ballet Masse at Berghain, Wiedemann collaborated with Marcel Dettmann to produce the soundtrack for one of the ballet's three parts, with choreography by Nadja Saidakowa and a stage design by the painter Norbert Bisky. A collection of remixes of this soundtrack were later released by Ostgut Ton.[31][32]

In 2017 Frank Wiedemann founded the label Bigamo Musik; a record label for left-field electronic music that does not fit the house music outlet of Innervisions.[33]

In 2018, Wiedemann composed the original soundtrack and collaborated with musicians of Berlin’s electronic music scene for the film Symphony of Now which premiered at the Berlinale International Film Festival 2018.[34] The music was based on the silent movie classic Die Sinfonie der Großstadt by Walter Ruttman (1927). For each of the five acts Frank Wiedemann co-wrote and performed alongside a collaborator, this music was then used by the director Johannes Schaff for his movie on Berlin nights. At the premiere of Symphony of Now the soundtrack was performed live by the artists.[35]

For WhoMadeWho he was featured and co-produced songs for their album Synchronicity in 2020.[36]

Frank Wiedemann is teaching electronic music production and electronic live music performance.[37][38]

Live Projects[edit]

As a live musician Wiedemann performs worldwide under his alias Âme (Live) in renowned clubs such as Robert Johnson or Berghain, as well as festivals such as Tomorrowland, Nocturnal Wonderland, Field Day, and Electric Zoo.[39]

Wiedemann repeatedly ranked in the top 3 in Resident Advisor’s annual top 100 live acts chart.[40][41][42]. His performances include elements of improvisation.

He participates in the project Circle Of Live by Sebastian Mullaert where up to five electronic live musicians meet up and jam with their electronic music equipment.[43] Occasionally Frank Wiedemann performs together with Mathew Jonson with improvisational sets.[44]
