Franky Johnson (born August 15, 1993) is a Filipino–American professional basketball player. He is best known for his success in 3×3 basketball — including winning a FIBA 3x3 Challenger two‑point shootout and multiple MVP honors — before transitioning to 5‑on‑5 play in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), competing internationally in The Asian Tournament (TAT), and playing professionally in the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL).

Early life

Johnson was born in Vallejo, California, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He played high school basketball at Angelo Rodriguez High School in Fairfield, California, before moving on to Virginia Union University (NCAA Division II) and Warner Pacific University (NAIA). Johnson graduated from high school in 2011 and completed his college education in 2016.

3×3 career

Johnson first gained widespread attention on the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 circuit, where he became one of the league’s most decorated players.

In September 2019, he became the first Filipino to win the FIBA 3x3 Challenger two‑point shootout — the Sukhbaatar Challenger in Mongolia — beating local favorite Ulzii‑Orshikh Myagmarsuren 14–12 and earning 1,000,000 Mongolian Tugrik (about ₱19,500).[1]

Earlier that year, Johnson hit the game-winning basket worth ₱1,000,000 as Phenom Basilan defeated Balanga in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 Patriots Cup Finals.[2]

He was also recognized with MVP honors during his time in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 Patriots Cup and was ranked among the top 3×3 players in the Philippines.[3]

Professional career

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)

Johnson entered the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) through the 2021 PBA Draft, where he was selected in the second round, 17th overall, by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.[4] He was one of three rookies signed by Rain or Shine and later agreed to a two-year rookie contract ahead of the 2021 PBA season.[5]

Prior to joining the PBA, Johnson played in the PBA D-League for teams including Marinerong Pilipino, and AMA Online, and also competed extensively in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 league. He was part of championship-winning teams in the national 3x3 circuit and earned Most Valuable Player honors in the 2019 Patriot’s Cup, helping establish his reputation as a physical and versatile guard.[6]

Johnson appeared in three games during the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup before a mid-season roster change. In December 2021, he was traded to the Meralco Bolts in a one-for-one deal for guard Trevis Jackson, a transaction approved by the league’s trade committee ahead of the Governors’ Cup.[7]

During his stint with Meralco, Johnson sustained a right knee injury. In February 2022, it was reported that he would be sidelined for approximately four to five weeks due to cartilage thinning and patellar tendon issues.[8]

Johnson’s athleticism and physical style of play continued to draw attention in Philippine basketball circles, with analysts noting his skill set and prior professional experience as indicators of his potential at the PBA level.[9]

The Asian Tournament (TAT)

After his PBA stint, Johnson joined the Zamboanga Valientes competing in TAT, an international club competition in Asia.

He had multiple notable scoring performances, including a 22-point game with five three-pointers off the bench in a win over Pola Pilipinas RPG.[10]

In another leg of the competition, Johnson scored 36 points with eight three-pointers and seven assists, powering Zamboanga to a key victory and positioning them for a finals berth.[11]

Zamboanga completed a championship run, sweeping the finals and defeating the Macau Black Bears; NBA star DeMarcus Cousins was also part of the roster.[12]

Indonesian Basketball League (IBL)

In 2025, Johnson signed with Pacific Caesar as a heritage player in the Indonesian Basketball League.[13]

He averaged 15.9 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game during the 2025 IBL season. Pacific Caesar finished the regular season in ninth place, missing the playoffs.[14]

Following the season, it was confirmed that he would not return as a heritage player for Pacific Caesar in 2026 due to rule changes of the league.[15]

Playing style

Johnson is known for his athleticism, scoring versatility, and clutch shooting, traits that allowed him to excel in 3×3 basketball competitions and adapt to traditional basketball formats.[16]

Personal life

Johnson is of Filipino heritage through his mother and African American descent through his father.
