From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Franziska Glassmeier (* 1985) is a German physicist and atmospheric scientist. She heads a Lise Meitner research group at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany. Her research focuses on the complex properties of clouds and their role in the climate system.

Biography

Franziska Glassmeier studied physics at the University of Göttingen and wrote her thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in 2010.[1] She completed her doctoral thesis under the supervision of Ulrike Lohmann at ETH Zurich, where she received her doctorate in 2016.[1] From 2016 to 2018, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, Colorado, USA, followed by a position at Wageningen University.[1] In 2020, she moved to Delft University of Technology as assistant professor, where she was promoted to associate professor in 2024.[1] In the same year, she received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council for the project “MesoClou – Unlocking the mesoscale frontier of cloud-climate uncertainty.”[2] Since 2025, she has been head of a permanent research group at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology as part of the Max Planck Society's Lise Meitner Excellence Program.[3]

Research

Glassmeier's research is motivated by the complexity of clouds and approaches to capture this complexity with the aim of better understanding the role of clouds in the climate system.[4] She combines traditional process-based approaches and data science with concepts from dynamical systems theory and statistical physics.[1]
