On 16 March 2019, Australian senator Fraser Anning was hit with an egg while he made a statement regarding the Christchurch mosque shootings.[2] The egg was crushed on the back of Anning's head reportedly by William Connolly[3] at a conference in Moorabbin, Victoria who was simultaneously filming the action on a mobile phone. In response, Anning twice struck the teenager in the face. Connolly was later dubbed "Eggboy" on social media. Connolly was later praised as a hero and people have began donating money for more eggs. A mural depicting the incident was painted in Melbourne's Hosier Lane.

Background[edit]

On 15 March 2019, a white supremacist terrorist killed 50 people in the Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand. Immediately after that, far-right independent Australian Senator Fraser Anning released an official statement that was widely condemned both within and outside Australia for being Islamophobic and insensitive to the victims of the terrorist attack. Within a day of his statement, a petition calling for his expulsion from the Australian parliament had amassed 1,250,000 signatures.[4]

Incident[edit]

On 16 March 2019 Anning held a press conference in Moorabbin, Melbourne, where he suggested that the cause of the attack on New Zealand Muslims was Islamic violence.[2] During this address, 17 year-old William Connolly[3] snuck into the room and, after waiting briefly, lifted his phone and interrupted Anning by splattering an egg on his head. Anning then punched the teenager, who can be seen saying "you're a racist" and continuing to hold his phone, until Anning punched him again.[2] After this, some of Anning's staffers and supporters wrestled the teenager, putting him in a headlock, and began kicking the teenager while he was on the ground.[2] One of the men who attacked Connolly was identified as Neil Erikson, leader of the neo-Nazi group United Patriots Front.[5]

The teenager was arrested by the Victoria Police, and released later that day without charges.[1] However, should Anning make a formal complaint with police, the teen would face pending charges related to the incident.[6][7]

Responses[edit]

  • A GoFundMe was started to support the teenager's legal fees and purchase of more eggs, and claimed to have raised over A$10,000 in under 24 hours.[8]
  • After video of the incident spread on social media, many people spread messages of support for the teenager.[9][10]
  • Satirical publication The Chaser declared: "No further nominations to be accepted for Australian of the Year 2020".[11]
  • People directly affected by the attack in Christchurch were cheered by the event, one man who is a member of the targeted Al Noor mosque saying it had "made his day".[12]
  • The English-language Egyptian website Egyptian Streets reported that the teenager had become a symbol of anti-racism on social media within the country.[13]
  • Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the “full force of the law” should be applied to Anning.[14]
  • Artist Van T Rudd painted a mural of the incident in Melbourne's Hosier Lane. In less than a day, it was painted over several times with different political messages.[15]
