Early life
fred berri, (author) born Frederick Dalberri was the second child born to ‘Book-maker’ Frederick (Freddy) Dalberri and his wife, Helen Pennetto (nee), an Italian American family on October 6, 1945, in the Bronx neighborhood known as Fordham. Dalberri was born in a private hospital named after famed Dr. Charles P. Fitch. Thus the name Fitch Sanitarium, founded in 1920, serving the area until closing in the early 1960’s. Fitch Sanitarium was located at 123 West 183 St. According to berri’s mother Helen, she had to leave him in the hospital for the first eight weeks of his life to care for her first born son, Frank, who was now three years and seven months old. Somewhere along the way, berri was considered legally blind in one eye, being told by his mother that he was born with that condition. No one can really say…
Since both Frederick (fred berri) and his father had the same names, early on, berri was called Ricky (part of Frederick) which turned to Ric in later life. He also dropped the ‘K’ from Frederic and used Frederick.
Freddy (Sr.) was in business with his father, Frank, and his brother, Albert (Al) and ran their ‘book-making’ business out of an office in Queens, New York.
After some years, his family moved from the Bronx to Yonkers, New York.
Berri's father died at an early age, fifty one, leaving his widow and two young boys, Frank, seventeen and Ricky (fred berri) who had just turned fourteen. After graduating high school, he and his mother and brother relocated back to the Bronx in the same section known as ‘Little Italy,’ again within the Fordham area living on Arthur Ave.
fred berri married his high school sweetheart, Louisa, and together, raised their children.
Early on, berri worked various jobs from shining shoes, as a grocer, butcher, owning a lunch truck, including being a licensed Real Estate Salesperson at eighteen. Eventually he began a successful contract cleaning janitorial service employing over 100 individuals. fred berri sold his business, relocating to Jupiter, Florida and graduated with an online degree. He became a banking specialist with one of the largest banking institutions in the nation requiring him to hold three insurance licenses and two security licenses including being a notary.
Before retirement, he began writing using the pen name, fred berri, having his first novel published after retirement. Now an accomplished author of novels and children's books, you can see his works on his website: fredberri.com
