Federico "Fred" Lozano Jr., (born March 27, 1991) is a graphic designer and creative director from Cleveland, OH.[1] While pursuing a film career, he stumbled into the graphic design world of the hip-hop scene by designing album and single cover artwork. He created the brand Art By Fred in 2013 as a medium to manage his business and release his work. He has gone on to create commission art for Hip-Hop's biggest acts, NBA players, and politicians.[2]

Early life[edit]

Fred Lozano was born on March 27, 1991 in Cleveland, Ohio. Raised by his mother and father who was a film fanatic, Lozano was highly influenced by classic Universal Pictures creature-features and 1980's filmmaking. Lozano found an early love for art in elementary school, often having his work showcased in local talent shows, magazines and art exhibitions. Lozano was first introduced to Hip-Hop during his middle school days and began a working relationship and friendship with his classmate and rapper, Tevon Rease.[3]

Art career[edit]

2008-2013[edit]

While attending Berea High School, Lozano began designing cover artwork for Tevon Rease in Cleveland, OH to help fund an independent film he had been writing.[4] In May 2013, Lozano reached out to Los Angeles, CA based rapper, Blu to work together. Blu commissioned Lozano to design the cover artwork for the lead single of his 2014 release Good To Be Home released by Nature Sounds.[5]

Lozano's work with Blu immediately brought him attention from across the Hip-Hop community. He was brought on as creative director for ANTHM and XV in a few short months.[6] San Diego, CA based producer, Fate commissioned Lozano to design the packaging for the physical release of his debut album, The Night Bus Home released November 27, 2013.[7] In November 2013, the popular Hip-Hop website, DJ Booth, hired Lozano to create the visualization of their returning "Freestyle Series", which collects freestyles from Hip-Hop's most prolific upcoming acts.[8]

Months prior to the announcement that Isaiah Rashad had signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, Rashad brought Lozano on board to design his logo. The two went on to put work towards his debut album Cilvia Demo, but Lozano's designs were rejected and the project went another route.[9]

A short beef with Lupe Fiasco was publicly showcased via Twitter on September 4, 2013 when Lozano tweeted out his designs for the rapper's single, "Crack" with Chris Brown from the Tetsuo and Youth album. Aggravated with the public's misunderstood connection between the album and the film Akira Lupe responded to Lozano's tweet with "try again" before announcing that the album had "nothing to do with Akira."[10]

2014-present[edit]

In January 2014, Lozano was brought on board in an unknown capacity to work on Miley Cyrus's MTV Unplugged special, but departed from the project for unannounced reasons.[11]

Lozano's work has gone on to be showcased by countless acts including Chance The Rapper, The Weeknd, Chief Keef, Kavinsky ASAP Mob, Sportscenter, Schoolboy Q, Danny Brown, Migos, Sir Michael Rocks, Kanye West's label G.O.O.D Music, Luol Deng, Freddie Gibbs, Ab-Soul, Maxwell, Isaiah Rashad, and more.[12][13][14][15][16]

Lozano was commissioned to create a portrait of the former Prime Minister of Mongolia, Sukhbaataryn Batbold's son, Battushig Batbold released in July 2014.[17]

In August 2014, Lozano was commissioned to create a Hip-Hop mural for the first issue release of EveryDejaVu Magazine. The issue was released via the official website and garnered Lozano mass acclaim for the mural.[18]

Lozano still plans to develop his art form into film. He is currently prepping his directorial debut film for release within the coming years.
