Freddie Pendavis

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Freddie Pendavis is a fashion designer, television consultant, ballroom legend from the House of Pendavis, and one of the last living cast members of Paris Is Burning.[1][2]

Early life[edit]

When Pendavis couldn't live with his birth family, Kim Pendavis took him in. They became close friends, attending balls and living together for several years. Kim Pendavis mentored Freddie Pendavis in fashion design and sewing. In the early 1990s, Kim Pendavis passed away in her twenties from heart failure.[3]

Paris Is Burning[edit]

Filming[edit]

Freddie Pendavis appeared in the cult documentary Paris Is Burning in 1990, as himself, a Black gay teenager. He was invited to participate in the film, due to his involvement in Ball culture, by Jennie Livingston when she was a film student at NYU.[4][5][6][7]

Performers vogue in the Ballroom community, a Black and Latino underground LGBTQ+ subculture that originated in New York City.

He reported on camera during the film how he often ate at a Roy Rogers fast food restaurant and left without paying. He taught viewers about how stunts work in the ballroom community. His scenes were filmed at the piers, where queer people regularly hooked up, hung out, did sex work, and sheltered from the 1970s through the 1990s.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

Aftermath[edit]

Pendavis was the only cast member to attend the 25th anniversary screening of Paris Is Burning, because he was one of the only remaining alive cast members from the movie in 2015. As of 2021, Pendavis is one of three surviving cast members.[8][9][14][5]

Pose[edit]

In 2018, Pendavis was hired as a historical and artistic consultant for Pose on FX. He appeared in the finale episode, "Mother of the Year", of the first season, playing himself and judging a ball.[15][16][17]
