The Free Caucasus Committee (Polish: Komitet Wolny Kaukaz, KWK) was an informal organization established in 1994 on the initiative of Polish anarchists, opposed to the Russian policy towards the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. The KWK's goal was to promote the idea of a free Chechnya and other nations of the Caucasus. One of its members was the journalist Piotr Lisiewicz.

Activities[edit]

The Committee conducted information activities, organized lectures, demonstrations, as well as occasional collections of clothes and food for Chechen refugees staying in Poland. The group conducted multiple protests at Russian consular posts in Poznań and Kraków, and at the Russian Embassy of the in Warsaw.

On February 23, 2000, the Poznań branch of KWK organized a picket in front of the Russian consulate in Poznań. The group demonstrated in a symbolic gesture of solidarity on the 56th anniversary of the deportation of the Chechens and Ingush by the Stalinist regime.[1] Several demonstrators got to the premises of the facility, where they destroyed the Russian flag and painted the inscriptions with red paint. This sparked a diplomatic scandal, and the Russian media called the event a "bandit action".[2] The court convicted five participants for violating public order. They were sentenced to 10 months in suspended prison and had to pay compensation to the city council.[2]

After the outbreak of the Russo-Georgian War in August 2008, the KWK website was constantly attacked by crackers, which led to the termination of the contract by the hosting company on whose servers the site was located.[3]
