The Friday Market or the Bird Market is a flea market located on Al-Talyani Street in Amman. This street is transformed every Friday from mainly selling used clothes into a market used for public auctions and for selling animals. Birds, dogs, reptiles, and sometimes even foxes are sold. Many other things are also sold, such as kitchenware and toys.
It runs every Friday from Fajr prayer until Zuhr prayer. This market is unique in how all shop there; the rich, the poor, and animal breeders.
Animals
By far the largest sector of the animal breeding market is dogs, with oftentimes foreign breeds being present. The prices range from 500 Jordanian dinars to 30 dinars. Oftentimes merchants compete to see who has more unique and foreign breeds. Traders who own farms are also interested in purchasing breeds of dogs that would be good guard dogs, characterized by strength, ferocity, and loyalty to their owner.
Birds are also quite popular at the market, especially canaries, which can reach prices of 100 Jordanian dinars. Oftentimes young canaries are sold for 7–30 dinars. What comes in second place among the birds is the checkered pigeon.
There are other high-priced species that have their dealers and amateurs, and the old Friday market pioneers confirm that the movement of buying and selling animals is estimated at thousands of dinars. [1] In the middle of the Friday market, the visitor to the market witnesses many sales of cages for birds, such as the aforementioned canary, for which the demand was previously big, and lovebirds and parrots of all kinds, for which the demand has decreased significantly.
On the opposite side of the Friday market, the visitor also witnesses the sale of snakes, turtles, and large cages containing species of Asian parrots.
Clothing
The market is also a major retailer of used clothes. Oftentimes, one can find sellers selling them for only one Jordanian JD, with the maximum usually being around 10 for heavy winter coats. The quality has been noted by many foreigners and there are many theories for such quality ranging from buying "scraps" from European manufacturers to buying them in bulk from charities.
Allotments
The allotments for the vendors are set by the city of Amman and "barely change." They are usually sublet for about 20–30 dinars. [2]
