Friends without Benefits
Friends without Benefits (FWOB) is a YouTube let's play show created by Jacob "Alpharad" Rabon IV and Davis Don "Dad_as Heck" Walker on May 16th, 2016. Currently it is hosted by Alpharad, Dad_as Heck, Major Duncan, Dillon "Deezus" Downing and Cade "WEEGEE THE GOD" McKown, with 3 guests being Eric "ESAM" Lew, Fio Zoll and Jesse "MVD" Negron, who only appear during the Mario Party series. The channel currently has 139K subscribers and 27 million views.[1]
Format
The channel uploads three episodes per day at 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 8:00 PM CST.[2] The 2:00 PM time slot is known as the Party Game Time Slot, which usually features Mario Party with 4 of the show's members, including the guests. The other two slots typically feature other games with 2–3 of the full-time members. The hosts of each episode discuss the gameplay and related or unrelated topics. The show is frequently compared to Game Grumps, a subject the hosts often use for jokes.
History
Beginning
FWOB's first video was an episode of Super Mario 3D World uploaded on June 24th, 2016, hosted by Alpharad and Dad. Every episode was hosted by Alpha and Dad until March 14th, 2017, when Weegee, Major, and Deezus were introduced in an episode of Jackbox.[3] Arguably the most important series in FWOB history is Mario Party, which premiered on June 12th, 2017. It is their longest-running series, currently with 300 episodes, and the only one in its second season.
Travis
Travis "Turvis" Roland was introduced in an arc of Mario Party 4 uploaded on September 7th, 2017. He was initially hesitant to join, taking months for Alpharad to convince him. He primarily joined due to feeling disconnected from his friends, enjoying his time with the FWOB crew at Smashcon, and being laid off from his job while away. [4] However, on November 1st, 2017, Alpharad announced that Travis had left the show.[2] This departure was initially planned as temporary, allowing Travis to be with his brother during back surgery and provide care. However, the problems that led Travis to leave home were resolved while he was at home. He rekindled friendships, and since the surgery was delayed, he needed income and secured a job.[4]
Guests
The first guest was MVD, appearing in an arc of Mario Party 8. Later, ESAM, who first appeared in a doubles arc of Mario Party 6, and Fio, Alpharad's fiancée, frequently joined the "Party Game Time Slot" until some fans speculated about their potential full-time membership. It was announced on Twitter that they would join, along with Fio, for the Mario Party series.[5]
