FriesenPress is a Canadian publishing services provider. Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Altona, Manitoba, the company offers editing, design, distribution, and promotional support services to assist authors with self-publishing their books. It is the largest company of its kind in Canada.[1]
FriesenPress works with authors from all over the world via its fully remote workforce. As of 2021, its team of over 55 employees and 100 freelancers have partnered with thousands of authors on self-publishing over 7,000 unique book titles.[2][3][4] FriesenPress is a part of Friesens Corporation, Canada’s largest hardcover book printer.
History[edit]
On July 13th, 2009, Friesens Corporation launched its self-publishing subsidiary called FriesenPress in Victoria, British Columbia. On July 13th, 2019, FriesenPress celebrated its 10th year in business and its 5,000th title. Two years later, the company had published over 7,000 unique book titles.[2]
On April 15th 2020, FriesenPress became the world’s only 100% employee-owned publishing services provider. Their employee ownership structure reaches all the way to their parent company, meaning FriesenPress employees are also employee-owners of Friesens Corporation.[5] In March 2021, the company shifted its headquarters to Altona, Manitoba and became a fully remote organization.[3]
Editing Process[edit]
The FriesenPress editing process begins with a manuscript evaluation by a dedicated Editing Coordinator to assess a book’s strengths, how it can be improved, and offer recommendations on the best way to move forward. A coordinator then determines the most suitable fit from a team of over fifty accredited editors.[6] Each of these editors are anonymously evaluated by an Editors Canada professional standards committee member.[7]
Awards[edit]
In June 2014, FriesenPress President Tammara Kennelly won Executive of the Year at the VIATeC Technology Awards. FriesenPress was also a finalist for Team of the Year.[8][9]
In June 2019, FriesenPress was a Team of the Year finalist in the VIATeC Technology Awards.[10]
