Frog Paradise is a Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created by French Video game developer Marco GESSA in Unity (game engine).[1] It is currently in early Alpha test stages of development. The game first released in closed Alpha where only a select group of active people in the Frog Paradise community were able to start playing on November 19, 2022, up until November 20, 2022.[2] Players control a cartoon frog-avatar on a mystical frog island.[3]
Gameplay and Lore
Before much was known of the game, the official Frog Paradise Twitter account had a small campaign introducing the lore through segments of "News" and "Breaking News."[4][5]
Story
A storm began to brew on the frog island, forming a cyclone, and frogs were alerted to stay indoors. Much later, the sky began to clear and the weather returned to normal, allowing frogs to go back outside and enjoy their life on the island once again. Soon, prices on the island began to rise, and the island was getting poorer and poorer; frogs were unable to afford even basic necessities. Frogs banded together during Christmas time, helping each other out wherever they could, but soon after Christmas, everyone began to get fed up with the conditions of the island and wondered why the authorities weren't doing anything about this? Some frogs decided to raise their voice and try to get something done; however, as the new year approached, a new storm started to form – it was another cyclone. Frogs quickly prepared for the storm this time and were ordered to stay indoors. The storm lasted awhile, so frogs were running out of resources to survive, luckily the wind did start to die down eventually, and soon after, frogs were allowed to go outdoors again. This storm caused major damage all over the island; frogs weren't sure how they were going to rebuild all this but knew they would have to do something about it.[6]
Gameplay
Frog Paradise divides its different locations into separately loaded areas and rooms. You can chat with other players by clicking the chat bar at the bottom of the screen and typing what you want to say. On the left of the chat bar is an emote button that lets you select different unique frog emojis, while to the right of the chat bar there is a dance button, a friend list button, an open inventory button, and a view map button. Currently, Frog Paradise has two mini-games, both requiring two players: a Connect Four-like mini-game and a Tic-tac-toe-like mini-game. Players can view other players’ profiles and send them friend requests or challenge them to Tic-tac-toe by clicking on them. You use your mouse and click to move your frog or interact with the world around you, and walking towards certain things lets you put it in your inventory. By opening your inventory, you can choose clothes for your frog and place items you have on the ground.[note 1][7]
History and Development Cycle
It's unknown when Frog Paradise first started development; however, the first clear trace of development is from late 2021 on the Frog Paradise Twitter.[5] The very first community video of Frog Paradise was posted on August 12, 2022, and in this month, the forest room was revealed.[8][note 2] In September, the tavern room was revealed.[8] November 19, 2022, was the day Frog Paradise launched the first Alpha wave; it came out two hours later than it was supposed to.[8][note 3] Near this time, Frog Paradise gathered feedback and assistance from Gobelins, l'école de l'image for two months; they helped with the user interface and user experience for Frog Paradise and tested it in a lab with other players.[1][8] Frog Paradise reopened in December 2022 for a Christmas party and added a friending system. Frog Paradise was also shown to Xavier Niel in December 2022. The player card was added in January 2023, and around this time, more community videos were being made.[additional citation(s) needed][note 4][note 5] [8]
Marco GESSA has stated some of the inspirations for Frog Paradise come from Club Penguin, Animal Crossing, Toontown Online, and Dofus.[8]
On June 2, 2023, it was revealed that Frog Paradise would be ending the first Alpha (referred to as Alpha #1) during a big party that would take place on June 12, 2023. During this time, anyone could sign up for an account to join Frog Paradise up until the start of the Party. During a poll on the official Frog Paradise Twitter, it was voted for the event to be moved one day earlier; due to this, players would have less time to sign up.[9][note 1] The Alpha #1 final party ended up being a massive success. It was claimed that there was a constant of 80 players online throughout the entirety of the four-hour-long event, with most staying for two hours, meaning around 160 players joined the event sometime during its four-hour run.[10]
The second Alpha of Frog Paradise (referred to as Alpha #2) started teasing features on June 11, 2023, the same day that the first Alpha ended, previewing features such as weather effects, resource gathering, economy, revamping the user interface, and updating the frog model.[11][12][13][14][15]
