From the Depths is a sandbox video game developed and published by Brilliant Skies Ltd. It was released through early access on Steam on August 7, 2014 was officially released on 6 November, 2020[1]. The game is currently only available on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Macintosh platforms.
In From the Depths, players assume control of a humanoid robotic avatar, "rambot," on several fictional planets with earth-like environments.[2] The player's goal is to is to conquer the planet by use of war machines and vehicles which the player designs. Examples of such vehicles may include: spacecraft, airships, battleships, submarines, and others.[2] The "building mode," where the player designs their craft, consists of various blocks, as well as more advanced components such as custom fuel and steam engines, rail-guns, particle cannons, etc. The game makes heavy use of a realistic physics engine, resulting in vehicles with variable and dynamic drag, velocities, centers of mass, etc.[3]
From the Depths is the first game produced by Brilliant Skies Ltd, and has received highly positive player reviews on Steam.[4] The game is currently being developed by lead programmer Nick Smart in collaboration with Lukaz Guzman.[5]
Story[edit]
The main campaign, quest for Neter, takes place on a fictitious, continental planet named Neter which consists of vast oceans with sparse desert islands spread throughout. Approximately 100 years before the arrival of the player, the planet was united under a faction known as the Steel Empire. Following decades of civil war and an extra-terrestrial invasion by the Scarlet Dawn faction, the Steel Empire collapsed and separated into various smaller factions which the player will encounter, as well as various nomadic and pirate factions.[6]
A secondary campaign, Ashes of the Empire; as well as another planet, Glao; have also been added to the game, among others.
Gameplay[edit]
In From the Depths, players traverse a large preset world with the objective of conquering the planet and eliminating all other factions. The game contains elements of logistics which allows players to construct cargo vessels for the purpose of transferring supplies between fleets of resource-gathering fortresses. The game is voxel based, and shares similarities to Minecraft. The world of From the Depths contains semi-realistic, twenty-first century technology, as well as weapons and vessels from the Age of Sail. Players construct craft using resources to conquer individual squares across the map in a grid-format. Some grids, called resource zones, allow the player to mine or drill for the in game resources, called materials.[7] The other in-game factions, of which there are currently eight, are able to independently declare war, create alliances, and make peace with each other as well as the player.[6] The player is able to view all of these relations at any time. The player, which is manifested as the humanoid "rambot," is currently the only character in the game, as the other factions consist entirely of vessels and structures which contain and are operated by Artificial Intelligence systems. Similarly, the player is able to construct artificial intelligences on their own craft such that the vessels may operate on their own accord.[6]
Reception[edit]
The game recieved "mixed" or "average" reviews according to review aggregation website Metacritic.[8]
The game has favorable status among 90% of user-reviewers on Steam.[4]
