Frostbite, (real name Leon Carver) is a character from the DV8 comic book series, published by Wildstorm.
Fictional character biography
Leon grew up with his mother in West Memphis, Arkansas. The identity and fate of his father are unknown. Leon attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., but quickly found himself in financial trouble. Due to low grades during his first semester, he was not awarded a scholarship, despite good grades the following term and a position on the football team. A government agent visited him, informing him of a special program. Believing he had no choice, Leon accepted and became part of Project: Genesis, a special program of International Operations. Like all subjects, Leon tested positive for the gen-factor substance, granting superhuman powers. The subjects were given a special activator drug during the program. Leon's first signs of Gen-activation were a discoloration in his hair, changing from black to yellow. Initially he hid this and considered shaving his head, but later accepted it. He also experienced nightmares and high fever. In the infirmary, he was cryogenically frozen.
Interference from John Lynch and Project Genesis subjects Gen¹³ led to the program's end and Baiul's escape, taking the frozen subjects with her. Several months later, Leon was the first to be thawed. His powers and competitive nature made him suitable soldier material for Baiul, who added him to DV8. DV8's original leader, Threshold, and his sister Bliss, were not considered part of the team by the other members, likely because they were already involved with I.O. before Project: Genesis. The Deviants, as they were nicknamed, were sent on numerous dangerous missions, and Baiul repeatedly emphasized their expendability. To survive, the Deviants became hardened and amoral. One of the few Deviants to retain some moral compass, Leon became increasingly disturbed by the death, depravity, and violence inherent in DV8.
During his time with the team, Leon was telepathically assaulted by a brutal aspect of Copycat's fragmented mind. This aspect attempted to force him into sexual relations. He escaped by draining much of Copycat's heat. During this encounter, Leon revealed that his first sexual experience, with Bliss, had been unpleasant.
Leon also participated in a mission to rescue a neighborhood from a homicidal drug gang. He was approached by a young girl, who pleaded for help. Afterward, discovering the girl had been bedridden, he helped her.
When Ivana blackmailed herself back into I.O., the team became I.O. agents. Leon saw this as an opportunity to atone for their past crimes. When Threshold betrayed the team, Leon decided to quit. Frank Colby, the I.O. agent who took over DV8, persuaded Leon to stay and become the new field leader. Colby believed Leon was the only one the others respected and that DV8 would disband without him. Though Leon had no loyalty to I.O., he recognized Colby's point that some Deviants wouldn't survive on their own.
On a mission, Frostbite encountered the villain Arthrax, who used his addictive touch. Forced to push his powers beyond their limits, Leon was severely injured. Following recovery, his powers were gone. Ivana subsequently fired Leon. Frank Colby then approached Leon, inviting him to join a conspiracy against Ivana. Disgusted with Ivana, Leon agreed and returned home to his mother. There, Colby's men swapped Leon with a body double, implanting Ivana's tracker into the double. Ivana had the double killed, making Leon appear deceased. Colby introduced Leon to his fellow conspirator, Stephen Callahan, father of Threshold and Bliss. With Callahan's aid, Leon's powers were restored. Shortly afterward, DV8 member Sublime joined the conspiracy, leading to a confrontation with Ivana and I.O., a battle that would ultimately bring the end of DV8.
Leon, along with Sublime and Copycat, attempted a return to normal life. Genevieve Cray, a female clone of Michael Cray, joined them, leading a fight against the villain Trance and his group. Trance captured Leon and Sublime, using his mind-controlling powers to force them to kiss. Frostbite and Sublime had a history of sexual tension, which Trance exploited. Cray and Copycat intervened, preventing them from going further. Trance and his team were defeated, but Leon and Sublime acknowledged their developing feelings and tentatively began a relationship.
Powers and abilities
Frostbite can absorb heat from any object, solidifying it with ice. He can also store absorbed heat and release it as blasts of energy. He previously used a special belt and gloves to aid in controlling his powers. His abilities have limits in terms of absorbed and stored heat.
Distinctive tattoos
Like most Deviants, Frostbite has red tattoos: 43 on both sides of his head, three parallel horizontal stripes on his upper arms, and BITE on his chest.
