Fundamental Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences was founded in 1935, under the auspices of the Armenian branch of the National Academy of the Soviet Union.

History[edit]

In 1944, the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic appointed the first Board of the Library that included such prominent scholars as Victor Hambartsumyan (President), K. Paffenholz, K. Trever, Kh. Sargsyan, A. Araratyan and R. Karakhan, as well as professional librarians E. Kochubina, A. Babayan, L. Melkumyan and V. Karmenyan. On November 10, 1944, the Central Library was restructured into the Fundamental Scientific Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. The first individual collection of the library was established in 1965, with a donation by Prof. Hamazasp Hambardzumyan.[1].

Collection[edit]

One of the main priorities of the library is enriching its collections with Armenian publications and publications on Armenian studies. The library is one of the largest depositories of literature in Armenian, and preserves a lot of antique and rare Armenian and foreign language books. The library also maintains 28 individual collections, which were created due to donations of honoured scientists and literary professionals: H. Hambartsumyan, A. Hovhannisyan, A. Takhtajyan, Hovsep and Karapet Kusikyans, Calouste Gulbenkian, A. Alboyajyan, B. Zhamgotchian, A. Gharibyan, K. Merdinian, P. Bostanjyan, H. Pambookian, H. Edgarian, M. Terzian, L. Nalbandian, L. Zekiyan and others[2].

Cooperation[edit]

The library performs extensive cooperation activity with the foreign libraries and institutions to create and maintain scientific and cultural relationships. In this area the library has profitable book-exchange programs with more than 150 institutions, among those are libraries, museums, publishing houses, scientific institutions, etc. in 60 countries. Amongst our partners are: Library of Congress, New York Public Library, British Library, Bavarian State Library, National Library of Russia and the Russian State Library.

Publishing activity[edit]

The library maintains publishing activity in the fields of current and thematic bibliographies[3]. Bibliographies of prominent Armenian scholars are published on a regular basis. Among other bibliographies are:
