About Furniture Row[edit]
Furniture Row Companies is the fourth largest family-owned specialty home furnishings and bedding retailer.[citation needed] The company comprises five specialty furniture store brands including: Oak Express, Sofa Mart, Bedroom Expressions, Denver Mattress Company and Furniture Row Outlets.
Furniture Row's growth was originally fueled by its first major store brand Big Sur Waterbeds. It has continued to grow through its various bedding and furnishings store brands, since 1972.[citation needed]
Today, Furniture Row Companies operates over 330 stores nationwide, across all its brands, and is still planning for aggressive expansion.[citation needed] The company is among the "Top 15" national furniture retailers and is the nation's largest cash buyer of home furnishings.[citation needed]
The company is owned and operated by Barney Visser, originally the founder of Pillow Kingdom. Pillow Kingdom is now a subsidiary purchasing component of Furniture Row Companies.
Trucking subsidiary[edit]
Furniture Row also operates a fleet of 120 over-the-road trucks pulling refrigerated trailers. These trucks mainly operate as a separate division of the parent company. They haul products for some of the largest food processors in the United States as well as overflow freight from the parent company.
History[edit]
Furniture Row started as Pillow Kingdom in 1972. In 1977 Big Sur Waterbeds opened in Denver. By 1982 they were America's largest waterbed retailer.[citation needed] From 1993 to 1997, additional stores were added. In 1997 the first Furniture Row Shopping Center was opened. Development of this multi-store concept continues with new shopping centers around the nation.[citation needed]
