Furrer Jacot is a Swiss ring and jewelry manufacturer based in Schaffhausen.[1] It was founded in 1858 by Jean-Jacques Arbenz as J.J. Arbenz. After Fritz Furrer took over the company in 1943 and married Lucienne Jacot, the company was renamed Furrer-Jacot. The company has been managed by Walter Häusermann since 2010[2] and has maintained its headquarters in Schaffhausen since its founding.

History[edit]

Atelier

The beginning[edit]

After completing his apprenticeship in Geneva, Jean Jacques Arbenz opened a goldsmith's studio in the Rhone city in 1857. At the request of his family to open his store on the first floor of the family home, he moved his activities to Schaffhausen, where business officially began in January 1858. The business developed so well that by 1872, 26 employees were recorded. After his retirement, Jean Jacques Arbenz bequeathed the goldsmith's studio to his son, who remained without descendants, and brought Fritz Furrer into the J.J. Arbenz company as commercial manager in 1941. In 1943 Fritz Furrer takes over the company completely and marries Lucienne Jacot from La Chaux-de-Fonds in the same year, whereupon he renames the company Furrer-Jacot, symbolic of his marriage to Lucienne Jacot.

At the beginning of the sixties, the export business to the core markets of the USA and the Middle East is pushed, and the international reputation increases. In 1975, the company moves into a new building in Schaffhausen. In 1979 Fritz Furrer sells the company to his Basel friend Joerin, who is active in the petroleum trade and drives the expansion to Japan. In 1992, the company transforms from a jewelry producer to a wedding ring manufacturer and develops Ringdividuell, a system sales concept of customizable designs.[3] After a management buyout in 1999, wedding ring sales begin in the U.S. and U.K. a year later to take advantage of the favorable currency environment.

Current developments[edit]

Walter Häusermann takes over the company in 2010 and pushes its positioning as a market leader in the wedding ring segment at Baselworld. The hand-wound carbon collection is launched in 2012.[4] Following a range expansion in 2013, Furrer-Jacot becomes the Furrer Jacot brand. In 2014, a flagship store opens in Tokyo's Ginza Main Chome.[5][6] The following year, the first steps are taken to re-enter the classic jewelry segment.

In 2016, the company moves into its new headquarters in the former steel foundry of Eisen- und Stahlwerke AG Georg Fischer on Mühlentalstrasse.[7][8] It is the third move in the company's history to take place within Schaffhausen.[9][10] In Schaffhausen, the manufactory uses the former largest metal works in Europe, a historic listed building that is reminiscent of the industrial age and, in this form, continues the tradition of metalworking on site. Of the former factory building, the rail crane with its over two-meter lifting hook can still be seen today, which, as a coincidence, provided the inspiration for one of Furrer Jacot's most successful designs.[11]

Furrer Jacot is not only a household name in Schaffhausen and Switzerland but is also internationally associated with Swiss craftsmanship and unique designs. The company regularly exhibits at prestigious luxury trade shows such as Baselworld in the past and currently COUTURE in Las Vegas[12].

Structure[edit]

In addition to the headquarters in Switzerland, there are Japanese and American sales companies.[13] There are 450 points of sale in leading jewelry stores and shop-in-shops in 26 countries worldwide. The main markets are Switzerland, Japan, the USA, the UK, and Germany.[14]

Management[edit]

Walter Häusermann is the company's managing director under commercial law.[1] The company employs around 50 people, including the sales companies.

Products[edit]

Furrer Jacot designs all creations in-house under the direction of head designer Lucas Ruppli, who has already done his apprenticeship at the company. Each piece of jewelry is handcrafted in the company's manufactory with expertise passed down from generation to generation by the specialists such as polymechanics, goldsmiths, diamond setters, engravers, and polishers.[15] Production is only made to order and each product is a handmade one-of-a-kind.[16] The company provides a lifetime warranty for its products.[17][18] In total, more than 10,000 rings are made each year.

In addition to luxurious wedding, engagement, and commemorative rings, Furrer Jacot's product range includes various jewelry necklaces, pendants, and earrings in different diamond and gemstone designs. Metals such as gold, platinum, carbon, and palladium are processed. Both platinum and palladium are alloyed with a fineness of 95 percent (Pt 950, Pd 950), and gold with a pure gold content of 75 percent (Au 750). Rings can be engraved with handwritten and personal engraving in any of the world's linguistic characters, a craft that is rarely mastered in this way nowadays.[19] Each ring also bears a serial number, which can be assigned to the owner ob the Furrer Jacot website.

Since 2018, HyCeram ceramic has been offered as a material for the rings in addition to carbon.[20] Since 2021, also tantalum as well as Glastex, in combination with gold or plating, have been offered as well.

Siara[edit]

The secondary brand Siara was established for the Swiss market to complement the high-priced fabrications.[21]

Sponsoring[edit]

Furrer Jacot provides the winning prize for the Swiss Young Athletes competition. This consists of a specially crafted ring made of a 950 palladium set with diamonds and rubies.[22]

In 2018, Furrer Jacot sponsored the seventh season of the Swiss Bachelor edition produced by the channel 3 Plus TV.[23]
