Fuse*
fuse* is a multidisciplinary art studio based in Modena, Italy. fuse*’s main focus is the realisation of artistic experiences harnessing the expressive potential of digital technologies. By mixing these two universes, the studio wants to inspire and positively impact local and international communities by suggesting novel ways to see and interpret reality.
History
fuse* was founded in 2007 by Luca Camellini and Mattia Carretti.[1] in Campogalliano, a small town north of Modena, Italy. Friends since childhood, after graduating they started mixing their different skills and interests to technically support external organisations and companies - Luca has graduated in Computer Engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and has always pursued his passion for computer programming and graphical simulations, while Mattia graduated in Chemistry and later in Business Administration from the Polytechnic University of Milan[2]. Their common passion for digital arts, technology and science gradually urged them to merge the three exploiting the narrative strength of immersive art installation and works. Sound design has always been one of the main pillars of the studio's research[3], and in 2009 sound designer Riccardo Bazzoni also joined fuse* and became a central component of the team[4].
From the first years, the studio evolved and grew to the point of having a core team of about 13 people. Because of the many points of view, interests and skills that coexist in the studio, every work or performance is the result of many perceptions and ways of seeing and experiencing the world. Every creative process is driven by the fascination for the complexity of human, social and natural phenomena and by the expressive possibilities of artistic experiences when merged with digital technologies[5].
Snow Fall[6] has been the first artistic project realised in 2009 in Modena, consisting of an interactive installation processing the images it captured by video cameras in real time. This first version was realised with infrared cameras, years before modern motion sensors were introduced to the market[6], while the successive iterations of the work, exhibited in Manchester, UK (2015)[6] and Washington DC, US (2019)[7], employed new and more modern hardware and software.
In 2011, the studio started experimenting with live performances based on the real-time interaction between sound, movement and light: N 4.0 was first presented in 2011 on the occasion of the art competition ‘Celeste Prize’ in New York[8]. On the same line, fuse* started developing in 2014 the trilogy composed by Ljòs (Light in Icelandic)[9], Dökk (Darkness)[10] and Sál (Soul). Ljòs and Dökk are currently on tour and have been presented at international festivals such as Mutek - Montreal (CA)[11], TodaysArt - Den Haag (NL)[12], Kikk - Namur (BE)[13], Digilogue - Istanbul (TR)[14] and RomaEuropa - Rome (IT)[15]. Sál, the third chapter, is still in production[16].
Over the years, the studio has developed more and more immersive artistic experiences that travelled all around the world and have been exhibited, between others, in Prague (CZ)[17], Beijing (CN)[18], Istanbul (TR)[19], Milan (IT)[20], Barcelona (ES)[21], Helsinki (FI)[22] and Atlanta (US)[23].
More recently, the studio has developed some new series of works: Falin Mynd, a generative data installation dedicated to the city of Milan, premiered at Malpensa Airport[24][25] and later travelled to LUX Festival in Helsinki, FI[26], while Fragile, an audio-visual installation, has been shown at Artechouse, in Washington DC[27]. Another iconic work is Multiverse, which premiered in 2017 in Parma (IT) with a monumental installation comprising a vertical projection and two mirroring surfaces 7.5m high[28]. The work builds on the multiverse theory of Lee Smolin and won awards such as the Art and Science Innovation Award from Tsinghua University and the National Museum of China[29][30][31][32].
In 2020, the studio started diving into the concept of trust and developed Treu, presented at the Pochen Biennale of 2020[33][34]. The concept has been further developed for the studio’s second solo show at Artechouse NYC, titled Trust (2022): once again exploring the theme from different timelines, the immersive installation also includes a sentiment analysis of 750,000 tweets containing the word “trust” uploaded during the pandemic[35][36][37][38].
That same year, the studio released Artificial Botany, an ongoing project exploring botanical illustrations through machine learning algorithms: premiered at Cosmo Caixa in Barcelona (ES)[39], it has later been adapted for shows in Kochi (JP)[40], Venice (IT)[41][42][43] and Utrecht (NL)[44]. In particular, the project has found an important iteration in the spaces of Unipol’s CUBO (Bologna, IT) thanks to additional illustrated herbarium by Ulisse Aldrovandi provided by BUB (University Library of Bologna), the Botanical Garden of Bologna and Alma Mater Studiorum[45][46][47].
In 2022, fuse* also realised Luna Somnium, a site-specific installation for the Gasometro in Rome[48][49][50][51][52][53][54]. It consisted of a projection system with 12 video projectors synchronised with strobes, beam lights and blinders casting the animations onto an 18-metres simulated moon, hung in the centre of the Gazometer structure. The studio also recently collaborated with Nederlands Kamerkoor and realised the visuals of the live media performance Van Gogh in Me from paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and Gustav Klimt. Van Gogh in Me has premiered in the renowned Konzerthaus in Vienna[55] and at the Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam[56]
fuse* has always bound its development to that of the community in which it operates by supporting, promoting, and conceiving projects that aim to spread culture and knowledge. With this intent, since 2016 fuse* has been actively involved in the organisation of NODE[57][58], an international festival for digital arts and live-media held in Modena and designed to give voice to the most innovative international artists exploring the creative potential of the synergy between music, video, sound design and electronic arts.
