Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) is an international contemporary art project held every two years in various locations across Gothenburg, Sweden. Founded in 2001, the Gothenburg City Cultural Committee organized the first two editions of GIBCA. Göteborgs Konsthall organized GIBCA 2005 and in 2006 Röda Sten Konsthall became the biennial's official organizer.[1]

Objectives[edit]

GIBCA's assignment from the Cultural Affairs Committee reads: "The Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art shall strengthen Gothenburg’s status as a City of Culture and secure Gothenburg’s position within an international context. It shall display international contemporary art of high quality and be an inspiration for galleries and other local arts venues at the same time as it increases interest abroad in the creative arts scene Gothenburg has to offer. The Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art has a pedagogical mission to bring contemporary art to the residents of Gothenburg, especially children and young people."[2]

The 8th Edition of GIBCA ran from 12 September - 22 November 2015 and was curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose. Titled A story within a story..., the 8th edition of the biennial examined ways in which systems of power have used tactics of amnesic oblivion and silence as a political strategy. It looked at works by artists who interfere with history-making and seek to open up the readings of contemporary history. It explored history as a radical act by focusing on socially engaged projects from transnational and transhistorical perspectives.[8] As a part of the biennial the swedish musician Jens Lekman, born in Gothenburg, wrote songs based on other people's stories.[9]The songs were titled "Ghost Writings".[10]

The 7th edition of GIBCA ran from 7 September - 17 November 2013 and was curated by Katerina Gregos, Claire Tancons, Joanna Warsza and Ragnar Kjartansson in collaboration with Andjeas Ejiksson. Titled Play! Recapturing the Radical Imagination, GIBCA 2015 offered a variety of curatorial perspectives and artistic strategies which served as a open and dynamic meeting point for creative playfulness, social experiment, forms of activism, fiction and philosophical deliberation.[13][14] As a part of the biennial a carneval was held, named "Exclude Me In", which highlighted and celebrated the queer history of Gothenburg. "Exclude Me In" was a performance initiated by the art group "MYCKET", together with the designer and artist Maja Gunn and "The New Beauty Council", and derived from "the Gothenburg carnival" which was held in the city in the 1980-1990's.[15] But homosexual life and desire was strikingly absent from any archival material of the carnival, which is likely a consequence of the prevalence of hate crimes against the LGBT-community during this time. The 6th edition of GIBCA ran from 10 September–13 November 2011 and was curated by Sarat Maharaj with Co-Curators Dorothee Albrecht, Stina Edblom, Gertrud Sandqvist. Titled, Pandemonium – Art in a Time of Creativity Fever, GIBCA 2011 posed the question: What form of creativity, art and thoughts are emerging in the aftermath of the radical social changes taking place today?[17][18] The inspiration for this year's biennial partly came from John Milton's epos Paradise Lost from the 17th-century. The curator Sarat Maharaj used the term Pandemonium from John Milton's epos where Pandemonium is the name of the palace that Lucifer and his followers builds after they've been banished from heaven, as a metaphor for a place where there is chaos but also a place where something new can evolve.[19] At the opening ceremony of the biennial at Röda Sten Konsthall people had to evacuate the buildning because of a threat that was directed towards the buildning. Four people were arrested on the 11:th of September, suspected of terrorist offenses.[20]
