Günther Eisenhardt (1933 – 2003) was a German composer, musicologist and academic teacher.
Life[edit]
Born in Gleiwitz, Eisenhardt studied music education, composition and Tonsatz /ear training in Halle (Saale), Berlin and Dresden. From 1955 to 1979, he was deputy director of the Dessau Music School. In 1980, he received his doctorate with contributions to Dessau music history[1][2] and habilitated in 1984 with the topic "Moritz Hauptmann and his influence on the development of dualism and polarity in music theory". From 1981, Eisenhardt worked as a lecturer for music theory at the Pädagogische Hochschule, now University of Potsdam. In 1986, he was appointed professor there.
From 1976 to 1996, he was head of the Dessau department of the Komponistenklasse Halle . He then continued his teaching activities part-time and as a guest lecturer in the summer courses of the class.
After his Emeritus in 1998, Eisenhardt devoted himself primarily to the promotion of Neue Musik and his own compositions. He was a co-founder of the Kurt-Weill-Fest in Dessau-Roßlau (Saxony-Anhalt) and is an internationally respected researcher of the Anhalt music tradition in particular.
Honours and awards[edit]
In 1975, Eisenhardt received the Wilhelm Müller Art Prize of the city of Dessau. In 1998 he was awarded the Central German Music Prize for his life's work at the 2nd International Andreas-Werckmeister Festival.
Eisenhardt died in Dessau at about 70 of age.
