GEM Capital is an international investment company operating in the field of private equity and venture capital. The main office of the company is located in Paphos (Republic of Cyprus).

History[edit]

The company was founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Anatoly Paliy as a result of consolidation of assets of the oil and gas sector, including the oil company First Oil. In 2019, First Oil was sold to Austria's Petrochemical Holding.[1]

GEM Capital's investment portfolio includes more than 30 projects from Russia, Europe, the USA and Israel. The Company invests in the following segments:

Investment directions[edit]

Oil and gas projects[edit]

In December 2020, the company placed an offer to acquire 100% of the shares of Volga Gas plc. for $25 million.[2][3] [4] The deal was closed in April 2021.[5]

Specialized Chemistry[edit]

In December 2020, GEM Capital, in partnership with Industry Partners Corporation, made a deal to acquire Corundum-Cyanide, the largest producer of sodium cyanide for the gold mining industry.[6][7]

Games and digital entertainment[edit]

Since 2019, GEM Capital has been actively investing in the games and entertainment market. The company focuses on studios that develop games and other entertainment products for mobile devices, PCs/consoles and VR.

GEM Capital has invested in more than 15 companies, including Mundfish (developers of Atomic Heart), Owlcat Games (developers of Pathfinder: Kingmaker), Weappy (developers of This is the Police), Deus Craft (developers of Grand Hotel Mania), 110 Industries production center and Gameram, a social network for gamers.

In December 2019, GEM Capital invested $ 1 million in the Moscow studio Owlcat Games, known for the games Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.[8]

In August 2020, a pool of investors, which included GEM Capital, invested $ 20 million in the games publishing house 110 Industries.[9]

In January 2021, Mundfish, a GEM Capital portfolio studio developing Atomic Heart— a high-budget AAA first-person shooter, announced the successful closure of a new round of funding. The investment round was led by Tencent with the participation of existing investors - GEM Capital and the founder of Gaijin Entertainment.[10]

In April 2021, GEM Capital invested $1.4 million in the Belarusian video game development studio Weepy, which created a series of games This Is the Police.[11]

In April 2021, GEM Capital, together with its partners, founded The Games Fund— a new early-stage venture fund that specializes in investing in game developers from Eastern Europe, mainly in mobile game creators. The amount of funds raised by the fund is US$50 million. GEM Capital acts as the founder and the largest investor of The Games Fund, and also participates in the operational management of the fund, including in the search and selection of objects for investment.[12]

In July 2021, the company invested $500,000 in the Gameram social network for gamers, founded by Philipp Gladkov, who previously headed the Pixonic game studio.[13]

In August 2021, GEM Capital invested $1.7 million in the studio Unfrozen, the authors of the tactical role-playing game Iratus: Lord of the Dead. [14]

According to the analytical agency InvestGame, GEM Capital is among the most active venture investors in the field of games in the world.[15] The company has one of the largest investment portfolios in this industry in the countries of Eastern Europe and the CIS.

Direction of new materials[edit]

GEM Capital focuses on venture investments in projects from the new materials segment. The company gives priority to projects in the field of production and application of single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene, as Anatoly Paliy, founder of GEM Capital, said in an interview with Kommersant newspaper in December 2020. In this direction, the investment group is present within the framework of two companies - the industry leader OCSiAl, as well as the Israeli technology startup Nemo Nanomaterials.[16]

In July 2021, GEM Capital's portfolio company, OCSiAl, attracted investments from one of the industry leaders in the production of air conditioning systems, Daikin Industries. As part of the deal, OCSiAl was valued at $2 billion.[17]

Investments in environmental projects[edit]

In 2021, GEM Capital began to work in a new investment direction of environmental projects for the company. In June 2021, at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 21), GEM Capital and Bio Planet LLC signed a memorandum of cooperation in the supply of lactic acid as a raw material for the production of polylactide (PLA - bio-base and biodegradable plastic), as well as in the field of future distribution of PLA-based products.[18]
