GE Decatur plant is an appliance manufacturing plant in Decatur, Alabama owned by GE Appliances, formerly a division of General Electric.[1] In 2018, the company announced it would make a major, $115 million investment into the Decatur plant.[2]
History
On August 15, 1977, GE opened its Decatur Plant Operations (DPO) in Decatur, Alabama, hiring its first 77 production employees to begin manufacturing top-freezer refrigerators on the banks of the Tennessee River.[3] This facility is the highest-volume refrigeration plant in the United States, producing top-freezer refrigerators in the 16 to 22 cubic-foot range.
In 2018, GE Appliances announced a $115 million expansion of its Decatur, Alabama facility. The investment added 255 jobs, increased the plant's production capacity by 25%, and transformed the 42-year-old site into the company's "Manufacturing Center of Excellence" for top-freezer refrigerators.[4] The plant was named Assembly Magazine's Plant of the Year in 2019.[5][6]
In early 2026, the company announced a $28 million upgrade to the facility, adding new automated thermoforming equipment and opening an on-site primary care clinic for employees and their families.[7]
