The GE U25BE is a rebuild from two GE U25B locomotives and they were rebuilt by the Southern Pacific Transportation Company.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

In 1975, the Southern Pacific Transportation Company decided to rebuild two units (#6708 (ex-SP 7508) and 6724 (ex-SP 7524)) into two of their own GE U25BE locomotives and they numbered them as #6800 and #6801, both units were rebuilt by the Southern Pacific’s own Sacramento Shops.[1][2] The rebuilds had included some updated electrical systems which is what lead them to being renumbered as 6800-6801 (later 3100-3101) and being designated as the U25BE.[1][2][4]

SP U25BE #6800 was first painted in the Southern Pacific's Bicentennial paint scheme to celebrate the Bicentennial, then later repainted into the Southern Pacific's "Bloody Nose" paint scheme.[1][2]

Both units had served well on the Southern Pacific Transportation Company until being retired in 1987.[1][2] #3101 was later stored in Aurant, California but was repeatedly vandalized and was deemed a total loss and scrapped.[1][2]

Preservation[edit]

Southern Pacific U25BE #3100 (formerly Southern Pacific U25B #7508, #6708 and #6800)[5] has survived into preservation and is currently operational at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California since its donation to the museum in 1988.[2][6][7][3]
