The GE U5B is a four-axle, 540 hp[1] diesel locomotive made by GE Transportation for RFFSA, Brazil. Created in 1959, this locomotive is part of General Electric's Universal Series.
History
Upon the creations of the U4B and U6B, the only engine used on the Universal Series was the CAT D397[2]. When CAT released their 8-cyliinder D379 engine, the U5B was made in 1959. This and the U8B were meant to replace the previous U4B and U6B locos for Brazillian Railroad RFFSA.
Somewhere between 1962 and 1969, most of the U5B locos became the U6B.
