GIR inc. is a Canadian proxy advisor. It provides proxy voting solutions (including analysis, vote recommendation and execution) to institutional investors regarding general meetings of listed companies. GIR's analyses are supported by its ESG Research. Since 2003, GIR has published an annual report on ESG issues.[1]
History
Founded in 2000 as a division of Demers Conseil inc. (now part of IA Financial Group[2]), GIR was incorporated in 2004. [3]
In 2009, GIR launched its proprietary disclosure platform Integralpha™.[4]
In September 2020, GIR acquired the proxy voting activity of SHARE, becoming the largest Canadian proxy advisor. [5]
Ownership and Clients
GIR is owned by key employees (co-CEOs), the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE) and a private holding.[6]
Clients include pension plans, portfolio managers, universities, workers' funds, foundations and religious communities in Canada and Europe.
Special features
GIR specializes in implementing custom policies. It does not own in-house policies, granting an absence of conflict of interest. Clients can adopt Group Policies in order to mutualize cost and have a greater impact on the votes cast at general meetings. It is the only North American proxy advisor to offer bilingual services in English and French.
