Background[edit]
McGee was born on September 4, 1978 in Greenville, Mississippi to Nancy McGee, a hospital nurse administrator and Kenneth Morris, a blues musician. Gabbie grew up in the heart of the Delta, learning music in her grandfather's church. Her singing career began at the very young age of 5 years old, when she sang for her kindergarten graduation. She graduated from Jackson State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communication and minor in Performing Arts.[2] She went on to win several pageants, including Miss Black Atlanta. Her passion for jazz and its preservation earned her the 2014 Artist of the Year from the Greenville Arts Council.[3]
She has released two independent albums: Certified Soul (2005) and Mississippi's Daughter (2010). She has won awards like BMI Independent Songwriter’s recognition for her song "Mississippi's Daughter." As a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Gabbie contributes to the evolving world of Jazz through her performance and studio recordings. She sang the national anthem at the 2014 Belk Bowl.[1]
