Gabriele Roberto (born 2 December 1972 in Cuneo, Italy) is an Italian composer of classical and film music.
Biography
Born in Cuneo, he graduated in composition from the Conservatory of Alessandria and later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Composition at the Royal College of Music in London under the guidance of Joseph Horovitz. During the academic year, he won the "Major Van Someren Godfery Memorial Prize", a composition competition organized by the Royal College. Several of his concert works have been published by Rai Trade.
In 2007, he won the Japan Academy Award for the score of the Japanese film Memories of Matsuko, and the following year he received a nomination at the Golden Bauhinia Awards for the soundtrack of Exodus, directed by Pang Ho-cheung. In 2009, he was again nominated for a Japan Academy Award for the fantasy film Paco and the Magical Book.
Following his early successes in Asia, director Lucio Pellegrini and the production company Fandango commissioned Gabriele Roberto to compose the score for La vita facile, a comedy starring Stefano Accorsi and Pierfrancesco Favino. The composer’s debut in Italian cinema proved successful, with the film receiving positive responses from both audiences and critics.
He has since continued composing for films, animation, and advertising in both Asia and Italy. Notable works include Viaggio sola (2013), directed by Maria Sole Tognazzi, and the music for the 2015 Barilla advertising campaign directed by Gabriele Salvatores and starring Pierfrancesco Favino.
In May 2015, he composed the score for Initiation Love, directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, which reached second place at the Japanese national box office. On 1 October 2015, Io e lei, directed by Maria Sole Tognazzi and starring Margherita Buy and Sabrina Ferilli, was released in Italian cinemas. Gabriele Roberto composed the soundtrack, released by Indigo.
In June 2015, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra commissioned him to compose a Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, which premiered alongside Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space and the Yokohama Minato Mirai Concert Hall.
On 18 October 2015, at the Salone Margherita in Rome, he received the "Chioma di Berenice" Award for the soundtrack of La prima volta (di mia figlia). To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the release of Romanza by Andrea Bocelli, Caterina Caselli commissioned the composer to create three new arrangements of the well-known song Con te partirò. One version was performed by Bocelli himself, another was written for the children's choir of the Teatro Regio di Torino, and a third was arranged for orchestra alone.
In the same year, the award-winning English director Michael Radford commissioned Gabriele Roberto to compose the score for The Music of Silence, a biographical film based on the life of tenor Andrea Bocelli, starring Toby Sebastian and Antonio Banderas.
In 2018, Gabriele Roberto was selected by Ivan Cotroneo as composer for the television series La Compagnia del Cigno (RAI), a project involving the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, the Youth Orchestra of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, produced by Indigo Film. In addition to composing the original score, he also created the symphonic arrangements of the pop songs performed by the seven main characters.
In 2024, he composed the music for the Netflix series La vita che volevi, directed by Ivan Cotroneo.

Gabriele Roberto is the first Italian composer to have won the Japan Academy Award, the highest Japanese recognition in the field of cinema. Based in Tokyo, he composes music for films, animation, and television commercials, and is also active as an orchestrator and arranger for Japanese musical groups released by Sony, Universal, EMI and Columbia.
