Gabrielle Bernadette Hadley (27 April 1964 –)[citation needed] is most noted for her role as Managing Director of ExtraMile Communications Ltd (2010 –) and for her charitable fundraising activity that has included rowing from London to Paris and climbing Kilimanjaro. In her business role, she has been noted for the creation of a staff-centric, family model that has won the company plaudits and the Investors in People Gold Award.
Early Life
Gabrielle Hadley was born in Lincoln, England to Timothy Andrew Hadley – an engineer at Marconi – and Joan Elizabeth Mary Hadley (née Nicholls). She has five siblings.[citation needed] She attended Washingborough Primary School and Branston School and Community College (now Branston Community Academy) before training for the Police Service at Ashford Police Training Centre in 1984. This was followed 18 months later by the Continuation Course.[citation needed]
She has been a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM RoadSmart) since 2009 – something she wanted to achieve in order to consolidate what she had learned as a driver in the police force.[1]
Working Life
Police Service
Gabrielle served in the Cambridgeshire Constabulary from 20 February 1984 to 28 August 1988 and frequently references the fact that, at the young age of nineteen, she was taking responsibility for everything that a police officer does.[citation needed] She left the force with a Certificate of Exemplary Conduct, after feeling that she was not happy with the positive discrimination that would propel her into higher ranks – she wanted to be judged solely on her own merits and not elevated because of her gender.[citation needed]
Private Security
Upon leaving the police service, she was hired by Debenhams in Cambridge as part of their in-house security team. Following two years with them, she applied to Group 4 Securicor as Area Store Detective Manager where she managed a team of 23 in-store detectives. After two years, she then worked with Sears, investigating staff dishonesty and, in September 1993, she joined Wickes to become Regional Security Manager. Her work took her all over the country and she soon suffered burnout as a result of the stresses of the job. Deciding that her life needed to change, she left Wickes in 1996 to become a self-employed cleaner and, for two years, worked at the homes of relatives and friends in order to provide herself with an income and to pay the mortgage.[citation needed]
Acting
Film and TV work Gabrielle embarked on a short career as a movie and TV extra around 1999. Following appearances on Holby City, The Bill and a number of dramas, including one where she was made up to look as if she had suffered a terrible beating. She also appeared on screen with Hugh Laurie, Tom Hollander and David Lester in Ben Elton's movie, Maybe Baby (film). Following this, she took the decision to step back from this work as she was setting up the company that would become ExtraMile Communications and she realised that she did not want to become a recognisable face in the regular diet of TV soaps and dramas.[citation needed]
Entrepreneurship
SurveyDigital In April 2000, Gabrielle Hadley and her husband, Nick Evans, set up a company called SurveyDigital. It provided online questionnaire and research services, largely to government education departments and agencies. The surveys delivered online were a novelty that larger research organisations had not yet started to deliver and there was a good deal of work, making the company highly profitable. At the same time, the company began working for a large corporate, creating and delivering its email newsletters and mailshots. The work grew substantially and, as the company grew, so did the need to employ further staff. Having begun the enterprise in two bedrooms in their house in Frimley, the pair had relocated to Staffordshire, where they bought offices in Eccleshall.[citation needed]
ExtraMile Communications Ltd. During the period 2006 to 2010, the company grew steadily and was rebranded, renamed ExtraMile Communications and it was then incorporated. After space ran out in these offices, the company moved to larger accommodation in the same town in 2011 and then moved again to their current location in Stone Business Park, Staffordshire in 2018. Currently, they employ 22 staff and have received accreditations including Investors In People Gold Standard, ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 14001. The company continues to expand and currently delivers Search Engine Marketing, Web Design and Web Development and Quality Services to international companies in up to 21 different country/language variants.[citation needed]
In 2019, Gabrielle was ranked as one of the Top Ten Women To Watch in Media[2] by About Time magazine.
Personal Life
Gabrielle married her first husband, Colin Frank Moore, on 19 September 1987 at Histon Baptist Church, both taking the surname Hadley-Moore. They subsequently divorced on 20 August 1991 in Bury St Edmunds County Court. She married her second husband, Nick Evans, on 20 January 1998 at Huntingdon Register Office. They currently live in central Bournemouth. She has no children from either marriage.[citation needed]
Charity Work
In September 2012, Gabrielle climbed Kilimanjaro with the objective of raising £19,340 (a pound for every foot in height of the mountain). This was her first challenge, raising funds for The Donna Louise Children's Hospice in Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent. She achieved in excess of £20,000.[citation needed]
In May 2015, Gabrielle was one of the captains of two teams which rowed non-stop from Tower Bridge in London to the Eiffel Tower in Paris in the so-called 'Everest of Rowing'. The 500 nautical miles trip of the Tower to Tower challenge raised in excess of £300,000 for the charity and was covered extensively in the media[3].
Gabrielle's interest in The Donna Louise has also led to her initiating pro bono work by ExtraMile Communications, donating a website[4] and underpinning the charity's email marketing campaigns[5]
