Gabrielle Jenkin is a New Zealand social scientist and academic at the University of Otago. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago, Wellington, where her research focuses on public health, suicide, mental health and acute mental health services.[1][2][3][4] In April 2025 she became Practice Coordinator at the Foundation for Equity and Research New Zealand (FERNZ).[5]
Education
Jenkin completed a Master of Public Health (with Distinction) and a PhD at the University of Otago. Her doctoral thesis, awarded in 2010, examined how industry and public health framed obesity in New Zealand policy debates.[6][7]
Career
Jenkin is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago, Wellington, and a member of its Suicide and Mental Health Research Group.[8][9] In 2025 she joined the Foundation for Equity and Research New Zealand (FERNZ) as Practice Coordinator while continuing her university role.[10]
Jenkin’s research spans suicide prevention, mental health services, and the design and social environment of acute mental health units. She led a multi-year programme on adult inpatient mental health wards in Aotearoa New Zealand that included studies of ward design, safety and recovery environments. Publications from this work report that smoke-free policies were inconsistently applied in psychiatric wards in New Zealand and explore bicultural frameworks for the design of acute facilities.[11][12] A large qualitative study she co-authored reported staff and service user perspectives on fear and violence in acute mental health facilities.[13]
Portions of this programme were supported by a Marsden Fund Fast-Start grant administered by Royal Society Te Apārangi (contract UOO1623).[14][15][16]
Public engagement
Findings from Jenkin’s research on smoke-free policies in mental health wards were covered by the University of Otago and science media outlets.[17][18][19][20]
Jenkin’s research on the design and social environment of New Zealand’s acute mental health units (2017–2020), funded by a Marsden Fast-Start Grant, received wide national coverage. A University of Otago summary and the Royal Society Te Apārangi highlighted how a Newsroom series reported the project’s findings on dilapidated buildings, overcrowding and “meds and beds” regimes, and noted follow-up discussions on RNZ’s The Detail and an interview on Nine to Noon about the implications for patient care and facility design.[21][22][23][24]
Findings from the same programme on smoking practices in ostensibly smokefree acute wards also entered public debate. The University of Otago reported that staff often ignored smokefree policies and that tailored cessation support was needed; the Otago Daily Times covered the study’s conclusions and quoted Jenkin on the need for better-designed therapeutic environments in new builds.[25][26]
Earlier in her career, Jenkin’s work on persuasive junk-food marketing to children drew national attention and policy discussion. University of Otago statements called for a ban on manipulative child-targeted advertising; RNZ reported the call, and the New Zealand Herald noted the Government’s lack of appetite for regulation at the time while quoting Jenkin on the techniques used to promote unhealthy foods to children.[27][28][29]
Jenkin also co-authored sector-focused research on suicide in the construction industry for MATES in Construction New Zealand and BRANZ. The report provided industry-specific suicide rates and characteristics to inform targeted prevention initiatives and was disseminated through BRANZ and MATES’ research platforms.[30][31]
