Overview

Gadihalli is a rural village located in the Sirsi Taluk of Uttara Kannada district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Situated deep within the Malenadu hill region of the central Western Ghats, the village is geographically significant as the headwaters and source of the Aghanashini River, one of India's few remaining wild, undammed rivers.

Geography & hydrography

Gadihalli is located at an average elevation of approximately 676 metres (2,218 ft) above mean sea level. The village spans a large administrative geographical area of 3,922 hectares (39.22 km²), making it one of the largest territorial revenue blocks by land area in the Sirsi rural limits, though it remains sparsely populated.

The village holds high ecological importance due to its role in the regional watershed. The Aghanashini River originates within the high-altitude forested catchment areas of Gadihalli. Due to environmental changes and urbanization around the historic town of Sirsi over the decades, the functional geographical source of the river migrated roughly 8.4 kilometres away from its ancient origin point at the Shankara Honda temple tank, moving directly into the dense forest boundaries belonging to Gadihalli. From this pristine catchment area, the river flows westward toward the Arabian Sea, forming the Unchalli Falls further downstream.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, Gadihalli has a total population of 237 people across its vast territorial area. The population features a density of approximately 6 inhabitants per square kilometre (16/sq mi).

The demographic breakdown recorded in the official census data includes:

  • Total population: 237
  • Male population: 116
  • Female population: 121
  • Gender ratio: 1,043 females per 1,000 males, which is notably higher than the state average for Karnataka.
  • Language: Kannada is spoken natively by nearly the entire local population.

Economy

The primary economic activity in Gadihalli is hill-slope horticulture and forest-dependent agriculture, characteristic of the Malenadu ecosystem. The primary commercial cash crops include:

  • Areca nut: Grown extensively in the sheltered valleys.
  • Spices: High annual monsoon rainfall supports the cultivation of black pepper, cardamom, and vanilla plantations.
  • Paddy: Terraced rice fields are cultivated during the southwestern monsoon season.

Administration & transport

Administratively, Gadihalli is registered under the unique Census Location Code 603249. Politically, it falls within the Sirsi Assembly constituency.

The village is connected by minor rural roads to major district state highways that lead to the commercial hub of Sirsi town, located roughly 15 to 20 kilometres away. The nearest rail connectivity is via the Talguppa railway station or the coastal Kumta line, while Hubli Airport (HBX) serves as the closest commercial aviation link, situated approximately 110 kilometres to the northeast.
