Galandar Janbakhishov (full name:Janbakhishov Galandar Surkhay oghlu; Azerbaijani: Canbaxışov Qələndər Surxay oğlu; Russian: Джанбахишов Галандар Сурхай оглы; date and place of birth: August 17, 1957, Dashkand village, Goycha District, Armenian SSR, USSR) is an Azerbaijani medical doctor and academic. In 2000 he was awarded the title of Honoured Physician of the Azerbaijan Republic.

He is a Doctor of Sciences in Medicine (1999), professor (2010), Academic Advisor of the Traumatology Department of the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (2006), Director of the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (1999–2006), Senior Traumatologist-Orthopedist of the Ministry of Healthcare (1999–2006), member of the D03.011 Dissertation Council (2000) at the Azerbaijan Medical University and of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (Brussels, 2004), organizer of the science-based application of the Ilizarov method and its widespread use in Azerbaijan, and a well-known figure in Azerbaijani traumatology.

Biography

Janbakhishov Galandar Surkhay oglu was born on August 17, 1957 in the family of “Hazratgulular” in the Dashkand village of the Basarkechar Region of the Goycha Ditrict, Western Azerbaijan. In 1974 he entered to the faculty “Preventive medicine” of the Azerbaijan Medical University and graduated with honors from the University in 1980.

In 1980, he was sent by appointment as a surgeon to Kurgan, Russia. In 1984–1987 he studied at the Russian Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics named after Academician G.A. Ilizarov and in 1987–1990 he worked as a scientific worker at the same scientific center and came to Azerbaijan in 1990. As a student of academician G.A. Ilizarov and V.I. Shevtsov, he learned the secrets of this science from them.

In 1990–1999 he was the senior scientific worker and academic secretary of the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics. In 1999–2006 he was the Director of the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics and the senior traumatologist-orthopedist of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Since 2006 till now he has been working as the Academic Advisor of the Department of Acute Trauma.

In 1989 he defended the Candidate's dissertation doctorate on the subject of “Simultaneous lengthening both tibiae in patients with achondroplasia – as the first stage of increasing height” (Russian: “Одновременное удлинение обеих голеней у больных ахондроплазией – как первый этап увеличения роста”),and in 1999 graduated from Doctoral School under supervision of Academician V.I. Shevtsov and took degree of Doctor of Sciences in Medicine defending the Doctoral dissertation on the subject of “Increasing height through lengthening lower limbs in achondroplasia” (Russian: "Увеличение роста у больных ахондроплазией с восстановлением пропорциональности тела методом дистракционного остеосинтеза").

He is the author of one monograph (with others), nearly 100 scientific works, 3 patents, 3 methodical recommendations, and several rationalization proposals. Some of his articles have been published in foreign countries such as Russia, Turkey, Iran, Latvia, Ukraine and Georgia and he has participated in the several regional, national and international conferences. He has prepared one Doctor of Sciences and five Candidates of Sciences.

For the first time in the world, he has scientifically substantiated and systematized the methods of lengthening height for 20–25 cm. For the first time in our republic, he applied and improved the methods of increasing limbs’ segments for 80-100%, multisegmental osteosynthesis, corticotomy at two or more levels during the severe deformities and shortness of pipe bones. He invented the new threaded wired external fixation apparatus for treatment of pipe bones fractures and developed the methods of osteosynthesis with it.

Since 2000 he has been a member of the D03.011 Dissertation Council at the Azerbaijan Medical University. Since 2004, he has been a member of the SICOT/SIROT (International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Brussels).

Since 2006, he has been the Academic Advisor of Traumatology Department of the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, as well as the science-based application of the Ilizarov method and its wide spread occurrence in Azerbaijan.

He was awarded the academic rank of professor in 2010.

Awards and honors

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev on bestowing honorary titles to healthcare workers of the Republic of Azerbaijan (No. 416) from November 2, 2000, Janbakhishov Galandar Surkhay oghlu was awarded the honorary title “Honoured physician”

By the Order of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Azerbaijan No. 129-K from November 10, 2016 due to the 70th anniversary of the Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, he was awarded with the “Certificate of Honor” of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the impeccable and efficient activity.
