Galaxy Group of Companies
The Galaxy Group of Companies is an Armenian holding company operating in Armenia, Georgia and Belarus.[1].Founded in 1999[2], the company has created and currently manages 15 brands and businesses, including Ucom Telecommunication company, Yerevan Mall shopping and entertainment center among others[3]. Galaxy Group of Companies was founded by Gurgen Khachatryan[citation needed], Artyom Khachatryan[5] and Aram Khachatryan[6] in the late 1990s. Within the first 15 years the company grew from 30 employees to 3000, becoming one of the biggest holding companies in Eastern Europe[7]. From an idea to a project[8], from a project to a company[9] – Galaxy has created its companies from the ground up, each time setting a new benchmark[10], delivering a new product or a service[11].
The early companies in the group included Megafood LLC[12] - food products importation company, Santafe open air restaurant, Chronograph[13] - luxury watches and jewelry stores. On later stages, the group expanded to the region with more than 29 stores in 3 countries[14].
In December 2015 Galaxy acquired Orange Armenia, the Armenian branch of French mobile network operator and merged it with Ucom[15]. In 2018 the Group announced[16] the project start of Innovation and Technology Park[17] in Armenia, a large scale project and commercial space designed for 6000 professionals[18]. In 2019 Galaxy Group of Companies announced[19] the launching of the Courtyard by Marriott[20] and Teryan 5[21] residential building project. In 2020 Galaxy announced that PAUL, the famous French café chain[22], is coming to Armenia. “I look forward to PAUL’s arrival to Armenia”[23], said Jonathan Lacôte, the Ambassador of France in Armenia[24].
Economic Impact and Public Importance[edit]
Galaxy Group of Companies has access to every third household in Armenia through its products and services[25]. Typical characteristics of the community are 18-55 years old urban women and men with higher education, of middle and high-income group, 46.3% of which is politically active and the Internet is the primary source of information for 76%[26]. During 2019 the acquisitions by Galaxy Group of Companies from the local market was USD 53 million impacting the GDP of Armenia and the company had 3.02% share in the credit portfolio provided by the RA banks which was about USD 128 million m[27]
