From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gambling in Australia is the most common type of activity among the citizens of this country. According to statistics, more than 80% of Australians are engaged in this type of activity.[1]Compared to other countries, this is a very high rate.[2]

Gambling commissions[edit]

Gambling in Australia is not regulated only one commission which responsible for gambling licensing. It exists eight commissions, each of which controls gambling in a certain region:

  • Northern Australia
  • national capital
  • South Australia
  • Victoria
  • Queensland
  • Western Australia
  • Tasmania
  • New South Wales

Most of these commissions perform several functions. In addition to gambling, they also control the sale of alcohol, races, bookmakers, etc. Regulatory requirements are different, so owners of gambling platforms who are interested in getting a license in Australia should decide in advance where their casino will be registered.

In Austria, it is prohibited to conduct and promote gambling in all jurisdictions. Exceptions concern only those gambling establishments that have a gambling license. These activities include:

  • lotteries (venue and online);
  • betting (both in the land-based casinos and online casinos);
  • 'pokies' (just in venues), electronic gaming machines, and slot machines;
  • land-based casinos, which include poker, blackjack, and baccarat.

Income is from gambling accounted for 2.5% of total government revenues, taking into account other sources of income. The lowest rate was in Western Australia (0.9%) and the highest in Victoria (3.2%). Gambling revenues as part of state tax revenues fell for all states and territories between 2006-07 and 2015-16.

Total gambling income in Australia in 2008-09 was just over $19 billion, and household consumption was 3.1%. [3]

Online gambling[edit]

The Australian Commonwealth Parliament passed the Interactive Gambling Act (2001) on 28 June 2001.[4] The law was not enforced on 11 July 2001.[5]

The Act online aims at gambling operators, and it is prohibited to offer gambling services to residents of Australia. It is also illegal to advertise gambling services to Australian citizens. [4]

Accessing and using online casinos is not an offense. It is also allowed companies located in Australia to provide their services to players who are not from Australia except for those countries that were called “designated countries”.[6]
