Gambling in South Africa
Gambling is also called betting on something valuable, with the awareness of risk and the hope of winning; the result of a game, competition, or an uncertain event may be determined by chance or have an unexpected result because of the player's miscalculation.[1]
Gambling in South Africa had been prohibited from 1967 till 1994. In 1994, the government of South Africa allowed the operation of land-based casinos. Thus, the gambling business was partially legalized.
History[edit]
Restrictions of gambling business in South Africa began started in 1967. South Africa’s government signed the Gambling Act of 1965 and prohibited all gambling activities except betting on horse racing as it was considered a sports activity. By 1995, there were opened about 2000 illegal casinos. In 1996, the operation of land-based casinos was legalized after the government was changed. [2] In the late 1970s, casinos began to function in the bantustans (independent areas which are called homelands) of Venda, Ciskei, Transkei, and Bophuthatswana.[3]
National Gambling Act of 1996[edit]
The National Gambling Act of 1996 included provisions regarding the regulation of gambling activities and the promotion of uniform norms and standards concerning gambling in South Africa. It added definitions to different notions concerning the gambling industry. Moreover, there was described the distribution of 40 gambling licenses among the provinces and given information about liability. It also established the National Gambling Board, a responsibility of the organization for the supervision and regulation of gambling activity. This change in legislation led to creating different gambling activities like legal casinos and a national lottery.[4]
In 2004, the government repealed the Act of 1996 Act.
In 2008, the authorities of the government passed The National Gambling Amendment Act.
