Gao Youxin (Chinese: 高又新; pinyin: Gāo Yòuxīn; 1916–1948), also spelled Kao You-hsin (Wades-Gile), born in Jin County (now Linghai City) of Liaoning province, was an ace fighter pilot of the Chinese Air Force during the Second Sino-Japanese War/World War II. As a teenager, he fled with his family to Tianjin 125 kilometres (78 mi) south of Beijing following the Manchurian Incident, to be where his older brother resided and worked with the national railroad system. It was from there that the teenage Gao enrolled in the prestigious Fulun (Rotary) Middle School that was endowed by the Chinese railway networks and provided internship in the national railway system; he would excel in sports as a member of the school's basketball team, and exhibiting superb skills in gymnastics, particularly on the parallel bars. After graduation, Gao Youxin headed straight for enrollment at the China Central Air Force Academy at the Hangzhou Jianqiao Aerodrome.
With the outbreak of full-scale warfare during the Battle of Shanghai, Taiyuan and Nanjing, the Air Force Academy had to be moved to a location farther away from the reach of the Imperial Japanese bombers, and thus Gao Youxin's class was temporarily disrupted while the Air Force Academy set up new base at the Kunming Wujiaba Aerodrome, where on 28 September 1938, then-cadet Gao participated in his first engagement of Imperial Japanese aircraft over Wujiaba, two months before graduating at the top of the class from the Air Force Academy on 01 December 1938, and attached to the 21st Pursuit Squadron, 4th Pursuit Group as a combat trainee. He would fight his first air battle as a commissioned officer of the Chinese Air Force on 03 April 1939 over Kunming.[1][2]
