Gapper (video game)
History
Gapper is a PC video game published in 1986 for MS-DOS. Gapper is a clone of the Konami PC arcade game Amidar that differs in several aspects, most importantly in that there was a single enemy, and in the function of leaving a gap instead of jumping to avoid the enemy. [1]
Gameplay
The goal of the game is to navigate a maze of lines in order to form colored boxes around squares of a grid, with each grid being worth a number of points. While attempting to navigate the grid, the player is pursued by a "seeker", which kills the player upon contact. The player can create a "gap" in the grid to temporarily delay the seeker's movement.[2]
Strategy
In the upper levels of the game, the speed of the game increases significantly and controlling the seeker's position becomes critical. Gapper allows for pre-entering the next turn to be taken by the player, which eventually becomes the primary method of winning the game. The "gap" becomes less important in later stages as it prevents the player from having control over the position of the seeker.[3]
Game Instructions
The gameplay instructions are as below from gameplay screenshots.[4]
OBJECT To color all the blue lines red by moving your man GAPPER with the arrow keys. At the same time you must avoid the SEEKER. POINTS Fifty points are awarded for each square you surround in red. 100 points are given when you encircle the point box while it is on. Each gap costs 5 points. GAPPING You can create a temporary gap in the lines by pressing the SPACE bar or RETURN. The word ON appears as long as the gap is active. Neither you nor the seeker can cross the gap.
